The drama “Saim-dang, Her Story” is a work written by a woman writer for women viewers, using the subject of Sin Saim-dang, well-known in Korea as a distinguished historical woman figure. The drama writer imagined Saim-dang freely. Such imagination seems to materialize another imagination and viewpoints of value from a feminine angle, different from a masculine one. In other words, women’s implicit wishes might be reflected in the work. This new angle made it possible to present Saim-dang, well-known as the archetype of the ‘good wife and wise mother’ trope to be expressed and presented as a beautiful woman with feminine beauty; and as the first love and everlasting unforgotten lover of a certain man. This sheds new light on the image of someone that most women consider the ideal woman. Here then, the image of an ideal woman is, a woman playing the role of an outstanding mother while also looking sexy. It shows that women hope to put these two factors together, instead of considering them incompatible. This runs counter to previous male perceptions, viewing women from two opposite sides and classifying the characteristics of women based on a dichotomous way of thinking. Also, in the drama, Saim-dang is portrayed as a woman who shows tears due to yearning for her lover, rather than weeping out of 'filial mind' as women do in books like “Naehun(內訓)” or “Yeosaseo(女四書)” which have been emphasized over and over. This image reflects the changed viewpoint of 21st century values. In the drama, Saim-dang is also a woman who refuses to stay at only home. She is not obsessed with the Korean traditional ethical norm that considers, ‘men and women fundamentally different,’ and goes out in the world. She shows an unending interest in the world out of home, and finds something important and valuable there. Representations of the historical figure of Saim-dang are constantly changing, keeping up with the flow of time. The changing image of Saim-dang in the TV drama “Saim-dang, Her Story” was created as 21st century cultural contents, with concern given to its possible widespread acceptance at home and abroad, and the response of viewers in Korea and other countries who determine viewing rates. The new image of Saim-dang, extremely different from the existing image, mirrors the image of women and viewpoint of values that Korean women consider ideal today.
