As the inter-Korean summit and the North Korea–United States summit for the denuclearization and settlement of peace within the Korean peninsula are held, the importance of multi-track diplomacy is highlighted more than ever before. This paper, written at such crucial time, focuses on the role of religion as one aspect of multi-track diplomacy, and studies the role the church played in the unification process of Germany and Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s endeavors toward the settlement of peace on the Korean Peninsula. Implications obtained based on the above are as follows: First, religion in multi-track diplomacy, can provide the belief and thought to realize peace, going beyond any system or power. Second, the aim of religion in multi-track diplomacy is not mission work but social participation. Third, religion in multi-track diplomacy can band together with other tracks or even lead other tracks. Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, in particular, sought to open a forum of cooperation and conversation between the two Koreas using diverse tracks such as business, culture, youth education, media, etc., instead of focusing on mission work. Their efforts could contribute toward the settlement of peace on the Korean peninsula, and from a multi-track diplomacy perspective, it signifies that religion has provided a threshold that can contribute to peace in the Korean peninsula.

한반도 비핵화와 평화정착을 위한 남북정상회담과 북미정상회담이 성사되면서 멀티트랙 외교의 중요성이 어느 때보다 기대되고 있다. 이러한 시기에 본 연구는 멀티트랙 외교의 한 분 야로 종교의 역할에 주목하여 독일 통일과정에 기여한 교회의 역할과 한반도 평화정착을 위한 문선명･한학자 총재의 실천을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 다음과 같은 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 멀티트랙 외교에서 종교는 시 민들에게 체제권력을 넘어 평화를 위해 노력할 수 있는 신념과 사상을 제공하는 역할을 할 수 있다. 둘째, 멀티트랙 외교에서 종교는 선교가 아닌 사회 참여적 기능을 목표로 할 때 통일에 기여할 수 있다. 셋째, 멀티트랙 외교에서 종교는 다른 트랙과 연대하거나 다른 트랙을 주도하면서 통일을 위한 역할을 수행할 수 있다. 문선명･한학자 총재는 선교가 아 닌 기업과 문화, 청년교육, 미디어 등 다양한 트랙을 통해 남북한 협력과 대화의 장을 열어 왔다. 그 결과 한반도 평화정착에 기여할 수 있었으며 멀티트랙 외교관점에서 종교가 한 반도 평화를 위해 기여할 수 있는 단초를 제공했다는 의미가 있다.
