The Influence of Internalized Shame on the Relational Aggression in University Students - The Mediating effect of Rejection Sensitivity -

The object of this study is to identify the structural relationships of internalized shame, rejection sensitivity, relational aggression in university students and to verify whether the rejection sensitivity has a mediating effect in the influence of internalized shame on relational aggression. The research questions are as follows: First, what is the relationship between internalized shame, rejection sensitivity, and relational aggression in university students? Second, does rejection sensitivity mediate in the influence of internalized shame on relational aggression in university students? A survey was conducted for university students attending four-year universities in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Incheon and a total of 444 questionnaires were used for the analysis. The measurement tools were composed of internalized shame scale, Korean university student rejection sensitivity scale, and relational aggression scale. The main results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the relationship between internalized shame, rejection sensitivity, and relational aggression in university students was found to have a significant positive correlation. Second, the analysis of the mediating effect of rejection sensitivity showed that rejection sensitivity confirmed the complete mediating effect in the path of the influence of internalized shame on relational aggression. Through these results of this study, the significance and limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies were discussed.
