This study examines the characteristics of Japanese disaster literature in the Meiji period. During the Meiji era, writers of Japanese literature responded positively to natural disasters. They did this when the Nobi and Meiji Sanriku earthquakes occurred, in the form of Novels of Donation. These literary works were called the "Atonotsukikage" (後の月かげ) and "Kaisyogiensyosetsu"(海嘯義捐小説). Whenever a natural disaster occurred in the Meiji era, newspapers would actively recruit for donations. However, this recruitment was intended to contribute to the formation of a community consciousness, thus helping to form a modern nation state of ‘compatriots’. Furthermore, the recruitment of this contribution was related to improving Japan’s image as that of a people with a high 'civilization' which emphasized 'charity' and 'cooperation'. This novel series actively helped to shape the terrible situation and grieving sorrow that was brought about by the disasters. These novels actively published works such as The Merit of Recruiting Donations. Furthermore they showed the unity of "compatriots" during times of disaster and crisis.

이 연구는 일본의 메이지시대의 재난문학을 대상으로 하여 그 특징을 고찰한 것이다. 메 이지 시대, 일본문학자들은 노비지진과 메이지산리쿠지진이 일어났을 때 의연(義捐)소설이라 는 형태로 자연재해에 적극적으로 대응하였다. 노비지진 당시의 『뒤의 달빛(後の月かげ)』과 메이지산리쿠지진 당시의 『해소의연소설(海嘯義捐小説)』이 바로 이에 해당한다. 이 당시 문학자들이 의연소설집을 간행하고 그 수익금을 기부하는 형태는 메이지시대 신 문사들의 사회사업과 궤를 같이하는 것이었다. 당시 자연재해가 있었을 때 신문사들이 적극 적으로 기획하였던 의연금 모집은 근대국민국가 형성과정에서 동일한 ‘동포’로서 공동체의식 을 형성하는 데 기여하고자 하였다. 나아가 이 의연금 모집은 ‘자선’과 ‘의협’ 등을 강조하면 서 일본인들이 높은 ‘문명’을 가진 국민이라는 이미지 향상과도 관련이 있었다. 이 의연소설집은 재해가 가져다 준 참담한 상황과 비통한 슬픔을 적극적으로 형상화하였다. 나아가 이들 소설집은 의연금 모집의 당위성이나 재난 속에서 ‘동포’들의 따뜻한 공동체 의식을 보여주는 작품들도 다수 게재하고 있었다.
