This article introduces the translator and his translation style of “The Flower of French Cavalry” which is a translation of Conan Doyle's Brigadier Gerard series.“The Flower of French Cavalry” was serialized as a masterpiece novel by the Japanese non-government newspaper “the Chosun-Ilbo” which was issued by the resident Japanese administration based in Busan. “The Flower of French Cavalry” could be interpreted as a “non-personal” narrative without utilizing the original characteristics of the “frame-type“ narrative structure. This may be due to the fact that the translator was Uryo Hajime, who was a translator of the Enlightenment Book and a translator of the Edo period. The non-government newspapers published in Busan were mixed type newspapers (instead of the popular press), which was popular in the Meiji 20 period. The literary articles of “the Chosun-Ilbo” were important readings for the Japanese, however it was a product greatly affected by the influence of Japan and the limits of the settlement area.

본고에서는 개항지 부산에서 거류일본인이 발행한 일본어 민간신문 『조선일보』의 간판 소 설로 연재된 코난 도일의 제라르 준장 시리즈를 번역한 ｢프랑스 기병의 꽃｣의 번역문체 분석 과 역자의 소개, 그리고 후리가나를 통해서『조선일보』의 지면 구성의 특성과 이중 구조의 독자층이 공존해 있었음을 살펴보았다. ｢프랑스 기병의 꽃｣은 원문의 액자형 1인칭 서술 구조의 특색을 살리지 못하고 ‘비=인칭’ 서술로 번역하였는데 이는 역자가 에도막부부터 다수의 계몽서와 학술서를 번역한 우료 하지 메였기 때문일 수도 있다. 개항지 부산에서 발간된 민간 신문은 동시대의 일본 대중지와 성 격을 달리해서 대중지화되지 못하고 메이지 20년대에 유행했던 소신문과 대신문의 혼합형의 신문이었다. 『조선일보』의 문예물은 거류일본인들에게는 중요한 읽을거리였지만, 한편으로는 일본의 영향과 거류지의 한계라는 자장의 영향을 크게 받는 산물이었음을 확인하였다.
