Recently, liberal education courses related to Japanese traditional culture or popular culture are on the rise in many universities. However, in the liberal education curriculum today, humanities courses in the traditional sense are a rarity. In the case of four-year colleges, it is a recent trend to put more emphasis on the importance and systematization of humanities in liberal education. Accordingly, a discussion of the proper role of the subjects related to Japan besides language education as humanities is necessary. This paper intends to discuss the problems of humanities education and the role of ‘Japanology’ in future liberal education. Toward this goal, it will present a model lecture dealing with the subject of Japanese literature, history and thoughts. Through these subjects, students will be able to understand and face others, as well as attempt to break the cognitive framework that has been fixed. Humanistic critical posture may not let loose from the frame surrounding ‘me’ at one time, but repetition of the will to break the frame into a new frame, that is, a constant series of breakaways. And the role of liberal education does not lie in breaking out of a frame completely, but in providing a place where students master the experience of 'breaking out of a frame' at least temporarily during the journey of life, as well as acknowledging the need for it.

근래에는 많은 대학에서 일본 전통문화나 대중문화 관련 교양 교과목이 증가추세에 있지 만 온전한 인문학 강좌를 발견하기는 쉽지 않다. 한편 4년제 대학 교양교육 과정의 경우 최근들어 인문교육의 중요성과 그 체계화에 대한 요구가 강조되는 추세에 있다. 이에 따라 언 어교육 이외의 일본 관련 교과목이 인문학으로써 어떤 역할을 담당하면 좋을지 논의가 필요 한 시점이다. 본고에서는 일본의 문학과 역사와 사상을 주제로 한 교양강좌의 모델을 통해 인문학 교육 의 문제점과 앞으로 ‘일본학’이 교양교육 영역에서 어떤 역할이 가능한지 그 과제에 대해 논 의하고자 한다. 본고에서 소개하는 교양 교과목은 타자를 이해하고 대면해 나가는 훈련이자, 인문학적 관점에서 지금까지 고정된 인식의 틀을 깨뜨리는 시도이기도 하다. 인문적 비판의 자세는 나를 둘러싼 틀로부터 일회성으로 자유로워지는 것이 아닌 틀을 깨뜨리고 새로운 틀 을 다시 만드는 의지의 반복, 즉 끊임없는 탈피의 연속일지 모른다. 그리고 대학 교양교육의 역할은 틀을 깨뜨리고 벗어남의 완성이 아닌 앞으로 걸어가게 될 학생들의 삶의 여정 중에서 일시적으로나마 ‘틀을 깨고 나가는’ 경험을 체득하고 그 필요성을 인정하는 장의 제공에 있다.
