Japanese-derived place names were used for more than 55 years in Seoul, approximately between 1890 to 1945. For example, in 1936, the Japanese government deliberately changed the local unit name from what was originally called “~[Dong]” to the Japanese name “~ [Cho].” Although the Korean government attempted to reinstate place names back to the original in 1946, the influence of Japan is still evident in Japanese-derived place names and civil administration styles. Through a detailed review of Seoul place name changes during the Japanese occupation period, this paper analyzes the implications of Japanese-derived place names. This paper uses 『Shise Ilram』, a periodical published in 1960 by the General Affairs division of the Home Office in Seoul city, as the major data. In the analysis, we were able to find that the area in which Japanese-derived names were used the most was “[Joong-Gu],” which used approximately 67%. We also found that those names were based on person names, historical incidents, and words that arouse Japanese nostalgia. Furthermore, we compared the addresses in an advertisement in 1896.1.8. ‘漢城新報’ with the addresses in 1910 ‘京城市街全圖’, and suggested a new perspective on the exact date in which the Japanese-derived place names were used.

서울에서 일본식 지명이 사용된 시기는 1890년 경부터 1945년까지 약 55년 정도다. 1936 년에는 전국의 ~동이라는 행정단위명이 ~町(초)라는 이름으로 일률적으로 바뀐 바 있다. 1946년 일본식 명칭에 개정사업에 의하여 다시 원래의 이름으로 돌아왔지만 일본식 지명과 일제강점기의 도시 행정은 다양한 형태로 지금도 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 논문에서는 일제 강점기 서울의 지명의 변화의 양상을 살펴봄으로써 일제 강점기의 일 본식 지명이 가진 의미에 대한 구체적인 분석을 시도하였다. 서울시 간행물로 1960년(단기 4293년) 내무국 총무과가 발행한 『市勢一覧』을 분석의 자료 로 사용하였다. 부록에 실린 구동명의 이름을 분석한 결과 일본식 지명이 가장 많이 사용된 지역은 중구였으며 무려 67%에 달하였다. 인명을 사용하거나, 역사적 사건에 기반하거나, 일 본에 대한 향수를 불러 일으키는 것이 지역명의 작명의 주요 내용이었음을 확인하였다. 1896년 1월8일부 한성신보 158호의 광고문과 1910년의 경성시가전도에 나타난 주소를 비 교하여 일본어 지명이 사용된 시기에 대하여도 새로운 의견을 제시하였다.
