This article introduces the Japanese-translated version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard, witch was on the front page of the Japanese Non-government Newspapers “Chosun-Ilbo” published in Pusan in 1905, and considers the context of this translation through the propensity of newspaper and Conan Doyle's translation in Japan. In interconnection with the series of military novels that occurred in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War, Doyle's Brigadier of Gerard series were published as a military novel, and this trend reached to Korea through the Japanese Non-government Newspaper such as “Chosun-Ilbo”

본 논문은 1905년 부산에서 간행된 일본어 민간신문『조선일보』제 1면에 게재되어 연재된 코난 도일의 제라르 준장 시리즈의 일본어 번역본에 관해서 소개하고 아울러『조선일보』신문의 성향과 일본에서의 코난 도일 수용사를 통해서 이 번역본이『조선일보』에 연재된 배경과 문맥을 고찰하였다. 러일전쟁 당시 일본에서는 많은 전쟁소설이 유행하였으며 그 과정에서 주로 셜록 홈즈의 탐정소설로 번역 소개되었던 코난 도일의 전쟁을 소재로 하고 있는 제라르 준장 시리즈가 번역 출판되었다. 그리고 이러한 일본 국내에서의 전쟁소설의 유행이 일본어 민간신문 『조선일보』를 통해서 개항지 부산에까지 건너오게 된 것이다.
