Locutionary verb iu accompanies wo-form noun (usually indicates object) to express specific utterance. There are two main types in this form of noun, depending on the meaning it conveys. One shows an event in reality, which is revealed through linguistic activity. The other shows the features of actual contents in the linguistic activity. Even if conditional form iuto or ieba is used with locutionary verb iu, semantic features that wo-form noun possesses are maintained. However, in case where iuto or ieba deverbalizes to postposition or sentence adverb, meaning that wo󰠏form noun holds is limited to the type that shows the features of actual contents in the linguistic activity. When -wo iuto or -wo ieba deverbalizes, the usage is categorized into postposition, sentence adverb and connective. To which usage they transition into is determined according to the semantic features of the wo-form noun. Moreover, even when the same noun is being used, the usage is decided by the semantic relations with other sentences and the syntactic features of the given sentence.

발화동사 「いう」는 구체적인 발화내용을 나타내기 위해 「∼を」형 (보통 ‘대상격’을 나타낸다)의 명사를 동반한다. 이 명사는 나타내는 의미에 따라서 크게 두 타입으로 나뉜다. 하나는 언어활동을 통해 표현되는 현실세계의 사건을 나타낸다. 또 하나는 언어활동의 내용에 대해서 그 내용이 어떠한 것인지 그 특징을 나타낸다. 발화동사 「いう」가 조건형 「いうと」 「いえば」로 활용하여도 「∼を」형의 명사가 갖는 의미적 특징들은 유지된다. 그러나 「いうと」 「いえば」가 후치사나 진술부사 등으로 탈동사화 하는 경우 「∼を」형의 명사가 나타내는 의미는 언어활동의 내용에 대해서 특징을 나타내는 타입에 한정된다. 「∼をいうと」 「∼をいえば」가 탈동사화 한 경우 그 용법은 후치사, 진술부사, 접속사로 나뉘는데, 어느 용법으로 이행하는지는 「∼を」형의 명사의 의미적 성질에 따른다. 또한 같은 명사가 쓰이고 있다고 할 지라도 타 문장과의 의미관계, 해당 문장의 구문적 특징에 따라 용법이 결정된다.
