The aim of this study is to provide an overview of “negative cycle” of Korean and Japanese from the viewpoint of typology. Moreover, this paper presents the interesting linguistic phenomena, which past studies have never explored. It focuses on SOV languages such as Korean, Japanese and SVO languages such as English, French. This paper mainly presents three following arguments: (ⅰ) Contrary to past studies, “negative cycle” may or may not appear in Korean and Japanese negative sentences depending on the types. (ⅱ) In regard to negative and negative imperative, the four languages such as Korean, Japanese, English and French behave differently as below: ･Ability to appear negative cycle (√: possible, *: not possible) (ⅲ) Through the above table, we can see that Korean and Japanese show the asymmetry unlike English and French. The reason why this phenomenon appears is to be explained by the morphological differences of the negative elements.

본고의 목적은 한일 양 언어의 부정순환(negative cycle)을 언어유형론적인 관점에서 밝히는 것이다. 특히 SOV 언어로 분류되는 한국어 및 일본어, 그리고 SVO 언어로 분류되는 영어 및 프랑스어의 경우를 통해 선행연구와는 다른 관점으로 흥미로운 언어현상을 제시하겠다. 본고의 주장을 정리하면 다음과 같다. (ⅰ)선행연구의 지적과는 달리, 한일 양 언어의 부정문은 그 유형에 따라 부정순환이 나타나는 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우가 있다. 이것은 인도유럽어족의 영어 및 프랑스어에서는 보이지 않는 현상이다. (ⅱ)한국어, 일본어, 영어 그리고 프랑스어 부정문의 유형에 따른 부정순환의 출현 유무는 다음 표와 같다(√: 유, *: 무). (ⅲ)위의 표와 같이 한국어･일본어가 영어･프랑스어와 달리 비대칭성이 보이는 이유는 형태론적인 특장에서 찾을 수 있다. 다시 말해, 영어･프랑스어는 용언부정문과 부정명령문의 부정소 형식이 동일한 데에 반해, 한국어･일본어는 각각 다르기 때문이다.
