This article examines a form of Japanese language that corresponds to a negative word in Korean, mot(못), as used in ‘Cheophaeshineo(捷解新語)’, and investigates whether it has been altered as the original publication was revised. The results are as follows. The Japanese expression that corresponds to a negative word, mot, can be divided into two types: an expression that adopts a form of possibility and an expression that does not. However, the latter also contains a contextual or lexical meaning of impossibility. ‘Cheophaeshineo’ had been revised to clarify the sentence structure of the parts written in Japanese, to correct errors or to reflect status. As for the parts that contain the negative word, mot, it was observed that in many cases, the revisions could not be entirely seen as manifesting changes toward modern Japanese expressions. In the revisions, changes in Japanese expressions often resulted in changes in Korean expressions. However, in many parts, the negative word, mot, maintained in Korean even when corresponding Japanese expressions were toned down or changed to different expressions. Still, overall, the inclination to tone down explicit and decisive expressions in the original version to milder expressions was observed in parts written in both languages.

본고는 『첩해신어』에 사용된 <‘못’ 부정>이 대응하는 일본어 형식을 확인하고, 해당 항목이 원간본의 개수 과정에서 변화가 있었는지에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 그 결과 아래와 같은 사항을 확인했다. <‘못’ 부정>이 대응하는 일본어는 <가능>형식이 개입된 유형과 그렇지 않은 유형으로 분류할 수 있다. 하지만 후자의 경우도 어휘적 성격이나 문맥상 <-수 없다>의 뜻을 내포한다는 점에서는 공통된다. 『첩해신어』의 개수 양상을 보면 일본어 부분의 문장구조를 명확하게 하거나 오용을 바로잡거나 位相의 문제를 고려한 변경도 확인되며, <‘못’ 부정>과 관련한 항목에서는 일본어의 변경을 근대 일본어로의 변화 양상을 드러낸 것으로만은 보기 어려운 경우가 적지 않다는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 아울러 개수 과정에서는 일본어의 표현방식의 변화가 한국어 표현의 변경으로 반영되는 측면이 강한데, 일본어 부분이 완곡한 또는 다른 표현으로 바뀌었음에도 불구하고 한국어 부분에 <‘못’ 부정>이 그대로 유지되는 경우가 많다. 이는 <‘못’ 부정>의 의미범주를 함의하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 다만 전체적으로는 원간본의 직접적이고 단정적인 표현을 완곡한 표현을 선택하는 쪽으로 변경하는 경향 역시 양 언어 모두에서 확인된다.
