The enshrined deities of Yasukuni Shrine are eirei (spirits of the war dead) as loyal subjects of the Emperor from the Meiji Restoration, and they were limited to those people belonging to military civilians. The qualification to be taken as a god to the Yasukuni Shrine has been extended from the war dead of the nation’s army who fought in the civil war from the Meiji Restoration to the war dead of the Japanese army from the outer wars. The number of enshrined deities of Yasukuni Shrine was accumulated along with the accumulation of the war dead from the outer wars. However, like the above, Shrines that increased the number of the enshrined deities was not found in the Japanese tradition. And the enshrined deities were given kensho (honoring) the Emperor saluted with the best proprieties. GHQ (General Headquarters of the Allied Powers) reckoned that the structure of Yasukuni strongly influenced Japan’s supernationalism and militarism as a kind of religious cult and regarded Yasukuni Shrine as a core facility of nation’s Shinto. Thus, after World War II, according to GHQ’s CIE(Civil Information and Education Section), Yasukuni Shrine came to make a new start by amending it into a general religious corporation. However, Yasukuni Shrine has come to cause various discussions up to now. This study attempts to serenely discuss where the origin of such discussion was and if there is a solution to cope with the issue.

야스쿠니 신사의 제신(祭神)은 메이지 유신 시대부터 천황의 충신으로 전사한 영령(英 靈)으로서 군인 군속에 속한 사람으로 한정되는 특징을 가지고 있다. 야스쿠니 신사에 신으로 모셔지는 자격은, 메이지 유신 시대에 내전에서 싸워 전사한 정부군부터 대외 전쟁에서일본군으로서 전사한 자에게까지 적용 범위가 넓어졌다. 야스쿠니 신사의 제신은 대외 전쟁으로 전사자 증가할 때마다 자연히 그 수가 증가하였다. 그러나 이처럼 제신을 늘려 가는신사는 본시 일본의 전통에는 없었다. 신사의 제신은 최고의 예를 다한 천황의 배례를 받는영예를 안는다. GHQ(General Headquarters of the Allied Powers)는 “야스쿠니”의 이러한 구조가, 일종의 컬트 종교로서 일본의 초국가주의・군국주의에 큰 영향을 주었고, 야스쿠니 신사는 국가 신도의 핵심적인 시설이라고 간주하였다. 2차 세계대전 후에 야스쿠니 신사는GHQ의 신도지령 등에 의해, 일반 종교법인으로 탈바꿈하여 새로운 출발을 시작하게 되었다. 하지만, 야스쿠니 신사는 오늘날까지 여러 가지 논의를 야기시키고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 논의의 기원은 어디에 있는지, 그리고 그 문제를 냉정히 논의하고 해결 방안 등을 모색하였다.
