This study attempts to focus on family relationships that Japanese women married to Korean husbands experienced through pregnancy and childbirth through a phenomenological perspective. By doing so, this study is expected to be utilized as a useful material to closely examine Japanese women’s adaptation to Korea in multicultural families. The participants of this study are seven Japanese women who were married to Korean husbands and live in Korea. This study classified their family relationships and lives which they experienced by way of pregnancy and childbirth into six main themes and 20 sub-themes. The following is a summary of the results. First, most of the participants of this study were married through a specific religion, the Unification Church. Only a small number of them were married through love matches. The participants had difficulties in communications in the early stages of their marriage. But it was found that pregnancy served as a significant factor to help them settle in Korean families. Second, the participants became intimate to their mothers-in-law after childbirth in the “childbirth and deepened family relationship experiences.” Although some of them got more intimate to their husbands, others felt estranged as their husbands did not pay attention to childbirth. Thus, two aspects were shown—friendliness and estrangement. In particular, it was found that a long, turbulent relation between Korea and Japan affected relationships in these families. Therefore, this study suggests a need for them to overcome this problem.

본 연구는 한국남성과 결혼한 일본여성이 임신과 출산의 과정을 통해 경험한 가족관계를 중심으로 그들의 삶의 모습들을 현상학적 관점에서 조명하여 그 의미와 본질을 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구결과는 일본인 다문화가정 적응과정 규명에 유용한 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구의 참여자들은 한국으로 시집온 7명의 일본여성들로서, 그들이 임신과 출산의과정을 통해 경험한 가족관계와 삶의 모습들을 6개의 대주제와 20개의 소주제들로 정리하였으며, 그 결과를 간략히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, “임신과 가족관계 경험”에서 참여자들의 대부분은 결혼과정이 통일교라는 특정 종교에 의해 진행되었고, 소수만 연애결혼을 한 경우였다. 그리고 참여자들은 결혼초기 의사소통의 문제를 가졌으나, 임신이 그들의 한국가정 내 안정적인 정착을 돕는 주요 기제로 작용하였음을 보여주었다. 둘째, “출산과 심화된 가족관계 경험”에서 참여자들은 출산 후 시어머니와 더 친밀해지는 경향을 보였다. 그러나 남편과는 일부는 더 친밀하게 변한 경우도 있지만, 일부는 남편이 자녀의 출산을 무관심하게 대하는 경우도 있어 소원함을 느끼는 것으로 나타나 친밀감대 소원함이라는 두 가지 양상으로 나타났다. 특히 본 연구는 한･일 두 나라간의 숙명적 앙숙관계가 일본인다문화가정의 가족관계에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타나, 이를 극복해야 함을시사하였다.
