Though Tokugawa or Edo Period is well known as a main part of Early-modern Era in Japan, here it is proposed that Tokugawa Period is to be recognized as acivilization that possesses very unique characteristics. Its major features are as follows: 1) an agrarian society in which market economization went ahead (anadvanced organic energy-based economy ), 2) an unique international relations, known as “Sakoku”, or Japanese World Order, 3) the formation of their rational manner, which made an affluent mature society, about the balance between population and natural environment. These features of Tokugawa civilization introducedunique modernization process in Japan, different from other early-modern societies, England or China.

도쿠가와(徳川)시대 또는 에도(江戸)시대라 불리는 시대는 일본 근세의 중핵을 이루는 시대이다. 하지만 그것을 근세라는 하나의 시대적 구분으로 보는 것에서 그치지 않고 독특한 특징을 갖는 하나의 문명이라는 점을 인식해야 한다. 첫 번째 특징은 주요 에너지를 생물에 의존하는 농업사회인데 시장 경제화가 진행된 ‘고도 유기 경제’라 불릴 만한 것이었다. 두 번째로 ‘쇄국’이라 불리는 독특한 국제 관계 체제를 구축하였는데 그것은 일본을 중심으로 하는 화이질서 형성의 시도였다. 세 번째로 인구와 자연환경 간에 균형을 유지하려 하는 합리적인 태도가 풍요로운 성숙 사회를 가져다 주었다. 이러한 특징들은 영국, 중국과는 다른 근대화 과정을 이끌어내었다고 할 수 있다.
