This paper analyzes the usages of omae in two of the Japanese early modern ninjōbon writings, Shunshoku umegoyomi, Spring colors: The Plum Calendar and Shunshoku tatsumi no sono, Spring colors: The Southeast Garden. A thorough investigation has been conducted regarding cases of Omae and some important characteristics of omae are found as follows: 1. Omae is the most frequently used personal pronoun in the Japanese early modern ninjōbon pieces. It was kamigata language mainly used in the kamigata region (the KyotoOsaka area) but was an important pronoun that was also widely used in the end of early modern period. 2. The level of politeness associated with omae in the later early modern period widely varied from expressing politeness to crudity. In other words, omae showed enlarged levels of politeness in the late early modern period in Japanese rather than descending levels of politeness. 3. Omae can be used with a predicate which shows a meaning of politeness or a predicate which has no polite meaning. This implies that predicates which were associated with omae also showed varied levels of politeness. 4. The omae and watakushi were used interchangeably so as to show high levels of politeness in the late early modern period .

근세후기의 작품인 人情本『春色梅兒誉美』과 『春色辰巳園』를 연구 자료로 하여, 「おまへ｣ 의 사용양상을 분석하였다. 『春色梅兒誉美』과 『春色辰巳園』의 용례에 대한 구체적 분석에 근거하여, 다음과 같이 「お まへ｣의 특징을 정리할 수 있다. 1. ｢おまへ」는 근세후기 人情本에서, 가장 사용빈도가 높은 대칭대명사이다, 즉, 「おまへ｣ 는 근세上方에서부터 사용되어진 上方語이지만, 후기에도 사용빈도가 높은 중요한 대명사 이다. 2. 근세 후기에「おまへ｣의 표현 가능한 대우가치의 범위는 넓어서, 상위대우가치부터 하위 대우가치까지 모두 나타낼 수 있다. 즉 근세후기 「おまへ｣의 특징은 대우가치의 하락보다 는 대우가치의 확대에 있다. 3. ｢おまへ｣는 경의를 포함한 술어와도 포함하지 않은 술어와도 모두 호응하고 있다. 이와 같 이 호응 가능한 술어의 대우가치의 폭 또한 넓었음을 알 수 있다. 4. 근세후기에 있어서도 「おまへ｣는 「わたくし｣와 共起가능할 정도로 높은 대우가치도 유 지하고 있다는 점이다.
