“Kyuanroku”(The Search for Peace) is generally regarded as a confessional work in which Uchimura Kanzo confesses his faith. However, transcending the category of pure confessional and illustrating the correspondence of his faith with his life, this could be said to be the most important of his works. While analyzing the core content of “Kyuanroku”, such as the principle of sin, the meaning of faith, the principle of atonement, etc., this study examines how Uchimura grafted his faith onto his actual life, and how he made his prognosis on the true nature of modern civilization while living in this presentday “modern era”. Trying to live the “spirit” that modern Japan had abandoned, he unceasingly advocated man’s inner reform. He also put forth that modern civilization’s superficial development was not progress, but rather retrogression, and that modern man must have a consciousness of mankind’s joint responsibility for sin, which applied the Christian principle of atonement. In a word, one may say that his life after “Kyuanroku” was one which put into actual practice “the power to save the world”.

『구안록』은 일반적으로 우치무라 간조의 신앙을 고백한 고백문학으로 본다. 그러나 이 책은 단순한 고백문학의 범주를 넘어 그의 신앙과 삶의 일치를 보여준, 그의 저서 중에서 가장 중요한 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 죄의 원리, 신앙의 해석, 속죄의 원리 등, 『구안록』의 핵심내용을 분석하면서 간조가 자신의 신앙을 어떻게 실생활에 접목했는지, 근대라고 하는 현재를 살면서 그 가 근대문명 및 근대인의 실체를 어떻게 진단했는지 분석했다. 그는 근대일본이 추구한 외형적 진 보의 성취보다는 오히려 근대일본이 버린 ‘정신’을 살고자 하여 끊임없이 인간 내면의 개혁을 주장했다. 또한 근대인은 자기중심에서 벗어나 연대책임 의식을 가지고 인류 상호의 죄를 속해야 한다고 주장했다. 『구안록』이후의 그의 삶은 한마디로 ‘세상을 구하는 힘’이 되고자 경주한 삶이었 다고 할 수 있다.
