This study investigates modal expressions, focusing on modal verbs of 44 kinds of Kamigata sharebon, which is authentic data on Kamigata language in the period of Hōreki- Kōka (1751-1847). Focusing on the slowness and speediness of the change, this research examines the reasons for the difference by analyzing conjugations, affirmative and negative expressions, the number of syllables, simple verbs and compound verbs etc. in comparison with the general tendency shown in the process of the development of modal verbs of Edo language. As a result, several characteristics can be summarized as follows: First, modal verbs in Kamigata sharebon are likely to behave in the transitional period. Secondly, from a perspective of verbal conjugation, modal verbs change in the order of the following types: Mizemkei > Shuōshi Rentaikei > Renyōkei > Izenkei Thirdly, negative expressions change earlier than affirmative ones do. Fourthly, considering the number of syllables, monosyllabic or disyllabic verbs change earlier than multisyllabic verbs do. Fifthly, simple verbs change earlier than compound verbs do. Sixthly, colloquial sentences change earlier than literary sentences do. Through the investigation, this paper comes to the conclusion that modal verbs of Kamigata sharebon in the period of Hōreki-Kōka were characteristic of behaviors in the transitional period and that the process of the development went on, showing a variety of differences in the speed of changes among conjugational forms, affirmative and negative expressions, the number of syllables, simple and compound verbs, and so on. Moreover, this fact coincides with the tendency in the process of the development of modal verbs of Kokkeibon, authentic data on Edo language.

본고는 근세후기의 유력한 上方語자료인 寶曆~弘化(期(1751~1847)의 上方洒落本 44 종을 대상으로 하여 가능표현, 특히 가능동사를 중심으로 고찰한 것이다. 특히 고찰 시에는 변화의 遲速 차이의 관점에 주안점을 두고 江戶語자료 滑稽本에 있어서의 가 능동사 발달 과정 속에서 나타나는 전체적인 경향과 비교하면서 활용형, 긍정표현과 부정표현, 음절수, 단순동사와 복합동사, 문체 등을 중심으로 검토하고 또한 遲速 차 이의 원인에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 몇 가지 특징적인 사실을 지적할 수 있었는데, 이를 요약하면 대략 다음 과 같다. 첫째, 上方洒落本에 있어서 가능동사는 滑稽本의 진전된 발달 양상과는 달리 병용 기의 양상을 보인다. 둘째, 활용형에서 보면 그 변화는 미연형, 종지 연체형, 연용형, 이연형의 순으로 진행되고 있다. 셋째, 부정표현의 변화 속도는 긍정표현보다 빠르다. 넷째, 음절수에서 보면 소음절 동사의 변화 속도는 다음절 동사보다 빠르다. 다섯째, 단순동사의 변화 속도는 복합동사보다 빠르다. 여섯째, 문체적인 면에서 보면 회화문의 변화 속도는 지문보다 빠르다. 요컨대 본고의 고찰을 통하여 寶曆~弘化期의 上方洒落本에 있어서 가능동사는 병용 기 양상을 보인다는 것과 그 발달 과정은 다양한 형태 즉 활용형, 긍정표현과 부정표 현, 음절수, 단순동사와 복합동사, 문체 간에 있어서 다양한 遲速 차이를 보이면서 진 행되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 이와 같이 上方洒落本를 통하여 확인되는 사실들 은 江戶語자료 滑稽本의 가능동사 발달 과정 속에서 인정되는 전체적인 경향 중에서 진전된 발달 양상을 보인다는 점을 제외하고는 일치한다는 것도 확인할 수 있었다.
