The purpose of this essay is to examine the notion “public-private” in the thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi from the perspective of psychoanalysis, especially paying attention to “the problem of reception in Japan”. In so doing, I will mention the reason why the discourse of “the public” has been questioned in contemporary Japan, in such aspects as not only the discourse on Japanese culture and academism, but also the feeling of crisis about the excess of “the private” and the degeneration of “the public”. Furthermore, the historical process of change in the notion of “public-private” in both the West and Japan will be summarized. Fukuzawa Yukichi, who is often regarded as one of the founders of modern Japan, though thinking that there was nothing more important than national independence, showed a critical attitude toward Meiji government as far as the issue of “public-private” was concerned. For example, his notion of “Kouchikoutoku”(public knowledge and virtue) must be deeply related to the individual inner freedom, that is, the autonomy of “the private”. However, a new vertical structure of Japanese bureaucracy was regenerated despite of Fukuzawa's intention to change the traditional vertical order of “public-private” into a new horizontal order based on the Western model. But nowadays “the private” only tends to be extended probably due to a kind of reaction to “Messi-hoko”(selfless devotion) in Japan. If we can call it a “private society”, it might share the same characteristics with the “society of jouissance” in common, such as the privatization of “the public”, the publicization of “the private”, or the variableness between “the public” and “the private”.

본 논문의 목적은 특히 ‘일본적 수용양식’에 주목하면서 후쿠자와 유키치 사상에 있 어 공-사 개념을 규명하는 데에 있다. 외래적인 것에 대한 일본적 수용양식은 일본적 사유와 등치관계에 있다. 본고에서는 이런 등치관계를 일본적 ‘수용문제’로 이해하면서 이때 일본에 있어 외래적인 것의 수용이 항상 현재와 연결되어 있다는 점에 주목하고 자 한다. 일본 근대화의 아버지라 불리는 후쿠자와 유키치에 있어 서구적 공-사 개념의 수용 또한 현재적 관점에서 재조명될 필요가 있다. 이때 현대일본사회에서 공공성 담론 이 문제시되는 맥락으로서 본고는 첫째, 일본문화론적 맥락, 둘째, 학문적 담론의 맥락, 셋째, 우경화 현상과 연동하는 ‘사’의 과잉 및 ‘공’의 쇠퇴에 대한 위기의식 등을 들고 있다. 이 점을 염두에 두면서 본고는 서구적 공-사 개념과 일본적 공-사 개념의 특징을 검토한 후 후쿠자와에 있어 공-사 문제를 다루고 있다. 후쿠자와는 나라의 독립을 최우 선시한 국권론자였지만, 공-사 문제에 관한 한 국가(정부)에 대한 비판적 이해를 견지 했다. 예컨대 그의 ‘공-사’ 관념을 가장 잘 보여주는 ‘공지공덕’론은 개인의 내적 자유 즉 ‘사’의 자율성에 대한 주장과 맞물려 있다. 그러나 이처럼 “일본의 역사를 관통하는 상하관계의 공-사 질서를 벗어나 근대 서구문명을 모델로 하는 공-사의 병립구조로 전 환”할 것을 추구한 후쿠자와의 뜻과는 달리, 근대일본에서는 관료를 상위로 하는 새로 운 상하관계구조가 재생되었다. 이와 관련하여 본고는 공-사 문제의 해명을 위해 보완 적으로 정신분석학적 관점의 도입이 필요함을 역설하고 있다. 오늘날 일본에서는 사적 공간만이 계속 확장되면서 공적 의식은 애매한 채로 남아 있다. 본고는 결론부에서 이 런 현대일본사회를 ‘사적 사회’라고 보면서, 그것이 라캉주의자 맥고완이 말하는 ‘주이 상스 사회’와 공통된 특징을 보여준다는 점에 유념하고 있다.
