Edo culture in an age of globalization
초록
영어
In the study of the culture of the Edo period (16031867), Japan’s relationship with East Asia is one of the most important aspects of research. However, it is also necessary to study the Edo period in connection with other areas of the world with respect to economy, culture and so on. The history and culture of the Edo period should be interpreted in its contemporary global context. In this paper, I am going to give three concrete examples, the domestic production of cotton textiles, the spread of porcelain, and the influence of printing techniques on the development of the visual arts. Each of these fields underwent strong influence from Korea. But, for Japanology, it is insufficient simply to compare the situation with that in Korea or to study influence from korea. In these fields in Japan, the process of development only becomes clear when we consider influence from India and European countries, as well as Japanese originality itself. The study of Edo culture should be undertaken with a global perspective.
