Pictorial Representation of the religious view in Hiroshige's Meisho Edo Hyakkei

This article analyzed the contents of Hiroshige's Meisho Edo Hyakkei(One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), which is considered to had played a essential role as a mass- media among the people, the Shinbutsu Shugo(syncretistic fusion of Shintoism and Buddhism) era, in the late period of Edo, when there was no existence of the mass media. As a result of the analysis, the main theme of Meisho Edo Hyakkei was ‘religious life’ which consists 80% of the whole work, and religious features based on various idea of religion are described on scenery of Meisho(attraction) by ‘superimposition’. In the perspective that Meisho Edo Hyakkei was the massmedia of the time, this can be regarded as the religious view of the people, who were engaged in many religious activity, had been expressed through the work.
