The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the nature and sginificance of the prayer of Nehemiah 9:5b-37. In general, the prayer is known asa penitential prayer. The penitential prayer means a prayer that confesses sin. However, the key to this prayer is not repentance, but pleading God for mercy. This study approaches from the perspective of historical prayer. Historical prayer refers to a prayer composed of specific historical events and times experienced by the people of Israel. Nehemiah 9:5b-37 contains the history of Israel which includes the Abrahamic covenant and the Exodus, the wilderness journey, the conquest of Canaan, and the Persian era after the captivity. These historical events are the module which is used as the building blocks of this prayer. Nehemiah 9:5b-37 interprets the above-mentioned history of Israel in terms of the confession of sin and the compassion of God. In particular, mercy appears not only to interpret past history but also as a hope to solve their suffering now. This study proceeded in the following order: First, I briefly introduced the trend of the research and the approach taken by this paper. Then, I looked at how Nehemiah 9:5b-37 is constructed. Thirdly, I examined the role of the land in supporting the coherence and cohesion of Nehemiah 9:5b-37. Fourth, I presented the working principles of their confession of sins and the compassion of God presented as theological premises. This prayer has fivec ompassion cycles. Finally, based on this analysis, it is concluded that the prayer of the Levites is a prayer of resistance that reflects the desire to escape the rule of the Persian empire after the exile.

느헤미야 9:5b-37은 레위 사람의 기도로서 일반적으로 참회기도로 알려져 있다. 참회기도란 죄의 고백을 주요 내용이라고 본다. 하지만 위 기도는 회개의 내용이 있기는 하지만 간청이 더 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 역사적 기도라는 관점에서 느헤미야 9:5b-37에 접근한다. 역사적 기도란 이스라엘 백성이 경험한 구체적 역사적 사건과 시대로 구성된 기도를 말한다. 이 기도는 이스라엘 백성의 역사에 신학적 해석이 가미되어 있다. 그 해석은 바로 긍휼이다. 본 기도는 하나님의 긍휼에 의지해 이스라엘 백성이 처한 상황에서 벗어나고자 하는 희망을 담고 있다. 느헤미야 9:5b-37은 포로기 이후 페르시아로부터 자유를 원하는 마음을 기도로 표현하고 있다.
