As of 2012, the medical industry in Korea is worth 81.9 billion dollars. In Korean won, it is approximately 82 trillion won, ranking it 13th largest industry in the nation. The medical industry treats human lives, and as seen before, has the highest possibility for growth compared to any other industries. Samsung Electronics selected medical industry as its new industry, along with semiconductors and mobiles, and bou Inc. Biotech and medical industries are fast becoming the most dominant industries, even exceeding electronics. Therefore, it is in our best interest to insert production potential in them at national level. Our productivity to population ratio is smaller compared to China and US, but Roche from Switzerland has focused on R&D and greatly profiting from its invention, Tamiflu. We must also concentrate our competence in medical industry. The significance of this paper is in the fact that it, for the first time, analyzed the impact of joining TPP have on our medical industry, employing the “Interindustry Analysis”.

의료산업은 2012년 기준으로 우리나라 전체 산업에 819억 달러 만큼 파급효과를 주고 있다. 이는 한화로 약 82조원에 이른다. 우리나라 전체산업 중 13위로 매우 높다. 의료산업은 사람의 생명을 다루는 업종으로서, 앞에서 본 것처럼 어느 다른 산업보다 발전가능성이 크다. 삼성전자도 의료산업을 신수종산업으로 선정하고 메디슨을 인수했다. 전 세계 산업 비중에서 전자산업보다도 바이오와 의료산업이 더 크다. 이에 우리나라도 역시 의료산업과 바이오산업 등에 국가의 생산 잠재력을 투입해야 할 필요가 있다. 인구 면에서 우리나라는 중국 미국 등에 비하여 적은편이다. 그러나 스위스 로슈사는 연구개발에 집중하여 타미플루를 독점생산하면서 엄청난 수익을 거두고 있다. 이러한 현실을 감안하여 우리나라도 의료산업에 역량을 집중할 필요가 있다. 이 논문은 “산업연관 분석”을 이용하여 TPP 가입이 한국의료산업에 미치는 영향을 최초로 분석한 것에 의의가 있다.
