지역사회의 참여적 문화활동을 가능하게 할 것인가가 중요한 논점인데, 연남동 골목축제는 그에 대한 중요한 함의를 제시하고 있다. 그 이유는 지역사회 주민들의 문화활동이 자신들의 고유문화를 되찾고 의식을 향상시키며 지역적 통합과 경제적, 독립적 영역 등에 많은 선순환적인 영향을 줄 수 있는 활동으로 자리매김 될 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 활동은 지역주민들의 인격적 상호작용과 지역사회의 보호 그리고 지역사회기반의 휴먼서비스의 전제조건을 제공할 수 있으며, 삶의 의의와 가치를 찾는 인격적 성장과 개발에도 도움을 줄 수 있는 무한 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 다시 말해 지역의 문화적 지역 고유화는 지역자본의 이익과 시장개척에 중요한 역할을 하며 지역사회의 문화적 다원성에 있어서도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 더구나 앞서 살펴본 지역사회의 능력강화와 자율성 그리고 아래로 부터의 변화를 통한 평등적 사회에도 기여하는 바가 크리라 생각한다. 물론 이러한 지역문화의 참여와 활성화에는 지역사회 주민의 의식고양과 결속력, 조직화 자원의 활용 등이 선행되어야 하며 이를 발견할 수 있도록 지원하는 전문가의 역할안배 등도 중요하다.
