Western Europe has been the center of development of its culture, and in the same vein, so has fashion culture been shaped in accordance with an evolving trend of power and capital. Despite significance of the New York collection, because of relatively short history and its emphasis on retailing, fashion design in the United States has not received much attention, and thereby led to limited academic studies. As Bonnie Cashin is the first-generation designer, understanding the characteristics of her design is a key to comprehending contemporary American design industry. It not only helps understand origin of modern American design, but it is also significant in that it broadens the horizon of Western fashion trend of what then was heavily centered on European fashion. 253 pieces from the University of Cincinnati and New York Metropolitan Museum have been studied. Natural fabric such as wool, leather, silk, cotton was used rather than synthetic fiber; especially use of wool and leather was noticeable. Also mature, autumn-like color was predominant rather than chic black-white color. Practical details such as big pocket, simple line, moderate fit which are heavily influenced by the orient are pronounced. Thus, Cashin’s design is summarized as convenience, practicality, orientalism, versatility and publicity. It is not too much to say that nowadays American fashion industry largely derives from Cashin’s insight in spotting the needs of American women in the post-war period.

서양 문화는 서유럽을 중심으로 발달해 왔으며 복식문화 또한 권력의 흐름에 따라 유행의 중심지가 바뀌 어 가며 발전되어 왔다. 유럽의 패션에 비해 미국 패션 산업은 그 역사도 짧고 리테일링을 중시하여 미국 패션디자인에 대한 관심은 비교적 약한 편이었고 따라서 학술적으로도 그 연구는 미약한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 미국 현대 패션디자인에 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는, 1세대 디자이너라 할 수 있는 보니 캐신과 그녀의 작품세계를 고찰하여 그 디자인 특성을 파악해 보는 데에 있다. 이는 미국 현대 패션디자인의 원류를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 뿐 아니라 유럽 중심으로만 연구해온 복식사에 미국 패션디자이너에 대해 고찰함으로써 서양 복식에 대한 이해를 깊게 하는 데에 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 분석 대상은 신시내티 대학교 와 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관에 소장된, 캐신이 가장 활발하게 미국 패션계에서 활동하던 1950년~70년대의, 총 243점의 의상들이다. 대부분 평면적인 구성으로 풍성하고 활동성이 좋은 형태로 디자인되었다. 소재는 합성섬유보다는 울, 가죽, 실크, 면 등 자연소재들, 그 중에서 울과 가죽 소재가 특별히 많았다. 색상은 흑백의 모던한 느낌보다는 딥톤과 덜톤의 성숙한 가을 분위기의 색상들이 주를 이루었다. 또한 동양풍의 영향이 짙 은, 복잡하지 않고 깨끗한 라인, 적당한 맞음새, 큰 포켓과 같은 기능적 디테일들로 실용적이고 편안함이 돋 보인다. 따라서 캐신의 디자인 특성은 편안한 실용성, 편리한 기능성, 동양적인 평면성, 스타일링의 유동성, 그리고 일상을 위한 대중성으로 분석되었다. 오늘날 미국 패션 산업은 전쟁 후 변모하기 시작한 미국 여성들 의 삶을 직접 체험하고 관찰하여 라이프스타일의 변화를 일찍 감지하여 디자인에 적용한 캐신의 통찰력과 직관력, 그리고 내적 감각에서 비롯되었다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.
