This study aims to guide fashion design students preparing a graduation fashion show or conducting fashion design inspiration through analysing an inspiration process of fashion design. Twelve students, who registered classes over the first and second semester of their 4th year to prepare a fashion show and whose works are consistent from concept to final outcome, are the objects of this case study. Their processes from brainstorming using mind mapping, inspiration, visual association, design to final garments are scrutinized. Through the analysis, some characteristics were found out. Firstly, among sources of inspiration such as figure, artworks, nature, artefact, region and abstract concept, students feel more comfortable to use nature, region, abstract concept as a starting point. They sometimes add one more sources such as artifact or artworks in the process. Secondly, they visualize inspirations from words, objects or concepts and these visual associations are mainly associations by contrast, contiguity and similarity. Thirdly, they adopt visual or other characteristics when they adopt line, color, material and details for fashion design. Sometimes they mix both characteristics in one design. Lastly, design process from mind mapping, inspiration, visual inspiration, design and final clothes goes through iterative process and it differs from each other. Through an analysis from preparation to results of fashion show, students have each individual method for inspiration, however, there are some tendencies which they feel comfortable of or are inclined to. Thus, it is important for tutors to guide students in various ways for producing creative outcome. If adding horizontal studies such as other universities and vertical researches of some years of investigation, it will be useful references for preparing graduation collection.

본 연구는 졸업 패션쇼를 준비하는 학생들의 패션디자인의 발상과정 사례를 분석하여 특징을 도출하기 위한 연구이다. ‘창조적 파괴’를 주제로 한 졸업 패션쇼에 참가하기 위하여 1, 2학기에 작품 준비 수업을 수강 하고 졸업 패션쇼에 참가한 학생 중 브레인스토밍부터 최종 의상 창작의 전 과정이 일관적이어서 사례분석 에 적합한 12명의 학생들을 대상으로 사례 연구를 진행하였다. 참가 학생들의 마인드맵, 브레인스토밍, 발상, 시각적 연상, 패션디자인으로의 전개, 최종 작품을 단계별로 살펴보아 학생들의 디자인 발상 과정의 특징을 분석하였다. 분석 결과를 살펴보면, 첫째, 발상의 요소로 인물, 예술작품, 자연, 인공, 지역, 추상적 개념 중 주로 마인드맵을 이용해 자연, 지역, 추상적 개념을 발상의 시작점으로 하고 인공, 예술 작품과 같은 다른 요소와 결합하는 복합적 과정을 진행하기도 한다. 둘째, 발상을 기초로 한 이미지 연상 작용을 통해 단어, 사물, 개념이 시각화될 수 있도록 하였고, 주로 유사 연상, 대조 연상, 인과 연상을 사용함을 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, 연상을 패션디자인의 요소인 선, 색, 소재, 디테일로 적용할 때 시각적인 면이나 그 외의 특성을 이용해 전개하는 것을 볼 수 있었고, 하나의 의상 디자인에 시각적 특성 이용을 복합적으로 사용해 전개시키는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 넷째, 디자인 발상 과정이 마인드맵, 발상, 연상, 전개, 최종 의상의 과정을 되풀이하고 반복하 는 과정을 겪기도 하며 이는 개인차가 있다. 분석 결과 학생들은 각자의 방법으로 디자인을 진행하지만 선호 하거나 더 편안함을 느끼는 분야가 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 창의적 디자인 도출을 위한 교수자의 안내자 역할이 중요하다. 후속 연구로 종적, 횡적 연구를 추가한다면 졸업 작품전을 준비하거나 디자인 발상 을 하는 학생들의 디자인 전개에 도움을 줄 유용한 자료가 될 수 있을 것이다.
