The purpose of this study is to provide cultural insight of Korean modern fashion by using a gender category. Based on the literature research, it revealed that Korea’s fashion has been changed according to the change of the gender value. Since 19th century, the Korean government has regulated the gender role while the dress code policy has been differently applied. However, as the gender value changed after 1970s, various fashion style appeared. Empirical analysis was conducted to examine gender perception of the Korean society. Interviewees were 11 men and 11 women in their 20s and 30s in order to examine their gender perception. As a result, it revealed that traditional gender value in the Korean society is not only a means of expressing sexual identity but also criteria of an ethical norm. However, the various gender values reflect that the importance of gender value has been weakened. Secondly, as a result of examining relation between gender value and preference for fashion style, it revealed that the attitude toward gender value had influence on a fashion style. Also, it has been found that fashion was not only a means of expressing their tastes and identities but also an important means of expressing courtesy and norms. However, aesthetic attitude prioritizing one's own satisfaction is also considered important. This study was conducted to examine the perception of gender and modern fashion in Korea through interviews. Derived from this study were the specificity of Korean gender values and cultural characteristic of Korean modern fashion. This study is expected to be conducive to future research on fashion culture study trying new interpretation of Korean fashion.

본 연구는 근대화 혹은 서구화 등 단편적인 관점으로 이해되는 한국 복식사에서, 젠더에 대한 이해를 통해 근현대 복식사를 고찰하여 한국 현대 패션의 문화적 특성에 대해 깊이 있는 통찰력을 제공하는데 목적을 두었다. 이론적 고찰에서는 서구 사회에서 젠더 가치관에 따른 복식의 변화와 한국 젠더의 특수성 및 한국 근현대 복식사를 고찰하였다. 한국 젠더의 특수성으로, 이중적 구도와 복잡한 중층적 구조를 도출하였으며 개화기 이후 국가주의적 젠더 정치 하에 남성 및 여성 복식은 엄격한 사회적 통제를 받았고 한국전쟁 이후 국가의 통제를 벗어나면서 다양한 패션 스타일이 유행하게 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 문헌 연구 및 질적 연구를 병행하였으며, 한국의 젠더와 패션에 대한 명확한 인식을 살펴보고자 20대, 30대의 남성 및 여성 총 22명을 대상으로 심층면접을 진행하였다. 자료 분석 방법으로는 횡단적 지표화 방식을 사용하였다. 한국의 젠더와 패션에 대한 인식을 고찰한 연구 분석의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과거에 비해 성 역할 고정관념은 많이 허물어졌으나 가정에서 남성이 경제적 소득을, 여성이 출산 및 육아에 대한 책임을 분담해야 한다는 전통적 인 인식이 여전히 강하게 남아있었다. 또한 남성 및 여성의 성격, 행동, 역할 등을 구분하는 고정관념이 남아 있어 한국 사회에서 젠더 가치관은 성적 정체성의 표현뿐 아니라 인성 및 품격을 평가하는 윤리적 규범으로 서 인식되고 있었다. 둘째, 한국 젠더 가치관의 특징으로 강한 이분법적 고정관념과 다양한 젠더 가치관의 공존이 도출되었다. 셋째, 한국 사회에서 젠더 가치관이 윤리적 규범으로 인식되어 오면서 패션은 단순히 취향과 정체성을 표현하는 수단일 뿐 아니라 예의와 규범을 표현하는 수단으로 여겨졌다. 그러나 다양한 젠 더 가치관이 공존하고 개인의 성향과 취향, 자율적 선택을 존중하는 문화가 확산되면서 자신의 만족을 우선 으로 하는 미적 태도 또한 중요하였다. 본 연구를 통해 한국 현대 패션은 옷차림을 통한 규범적 가치를 중시 하는 한편, 다양한 패션 스타일을 단편적으로 경험하고자 한다는 점에서 이중적인 패션 문화를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
