A fire broke out on the first floor of the Goyang Terminal building with a total floor area of 146,071㎡ and seven stories above and five under the ground. It has a terminal, movie theaters and large shopping centers. The electrical power of fire shutters was shut off, a false ceiling was removed, a sprinkler valve was closed, and a fire alarm was stopped to do construction work. However, a gas valve was opened and residential natural gas was leaked. It was ignited to the welding spark and moved to the poly-urethane foam of the ceiling. Then, a fire occurred. The fire grew rapidly and smoke was spread rapidly to the entire floor including the waiting room on the second floor of the terminal. Eight deaths, 115 injuries, and property damage of over 60 billion Korean won were caused by the fire. The business of the entire building was suspended for about six months. Based on the results of fire investigation, this study analyzed the situation i㎜ediately before the fire, the origin of the fire, the cause of the fire, the sudden growing in the fire, the cause of rapid spread of smoke, the cause of multiple death, and a lesson.

터미널, 영화관, 대형쇼핑센터 등이 입점해 있는 지상7층 지하5층의 연면적 146,071 ㎡인 고양종합터미널 건물의 지하1층에서 방화셔터 전원을 차단하고 반자를 철거하고 스프링클러설비 밸브를 폐쇄하고 화재경보벨을 정지시킨 상태로 공사 중 가스밸브가 열려 누설된 도시가스가 용접불꽃에 착화된 후 천장의 우레탄폼에 옮아 붙은 화재가 발생하였다. 이 화재는 급격히 성장하고 연기가 터미널 2층의 대합실 등 전체 층에 급 속히 전파되어 8명의 사망자와 115명의 부상자가 발생하였고 600억 원 이상의 재산피 해가 발생하였으며 건물 전체의 영업이 약 6개월 정지되었다. 이 논문에서는 화재조사 결과를 토대로 화재발생 직전 상황, 발화개소, 화재원인, 급격한 화재의 확대와 급속한 연기확산 원인, 다수사망자 발생원인, 교훈 등을 분석하였다.
