Neo-Renaissance was a stylistic trend that drew inspirations from Neoclassicism and Romanticism movements. It appeared in the late 18th century Germany – originally as an architectural style and subsequently as a painting style as well – and then expanded its influence among the 19th century Italian painters, the most prominent of whom was Francesco Hayez. Hayez was the leading artist of Romanticism when Italian art was languishing due to the lack of sense of direction. This study deduces from the works of Hayez that Italian Romanticism of that period not only inherited the style of the classical Italian Renaissance but also shared the ideas of common European framework of Romanticism. It is also noted that Hayez’s paintings follow the direction of critical history, which is the healthiest developmental tendency among Friedrick Nietzsche’s three types of history.

본고는 18세기 후반부터 나타나기 시작한 신고전주의, 그리고 낭만주의로의 진행에 근거하여 당시에 나타났던 사조들 중 하나인 네오르네상스란 개념이 원래는 건축적, 회화적으로 독일에서 먼저 사용되었으며 이후 이탈리아가 동일한 진행을 따르고 있음을 밝힌다. 나아가 19세기 유럽 예술계에서다소 무기력한 모습을 보였던 이탈리아의 19세기 대표 화가로 프란체스코 아예즈를 주목하고 이 화가의 작품을 통해 당시 이탈리아의 낭만주의 미술이 고전에 상당히 근거하고 있으나 전유럽 공통의 낭만주의적 경향을 동시에 띄고 있음을 밝히는데 의의를 둔다. 또한 아예즈의 회화가, 니체가 구분한 세종류의 역사 중에서 가장 건강하고 발전적인 성향인 ‘비판적 역사’의 방향을 따르고 있음에 주목한다.
