This study explores the aesthetics of reception with regard to The Incredulity of St. Thomas by Hendrick ter Brugghen(1588-1629), a seventeenth century painter from the northern Netherlands, who had studied Caravaggio’s St. Thomas in Rome. This study compares the two paintings of St. Thomas and analyzes their compositional differences. Then, for the purpose of illustrating interpretive reception, the study constructs and presents a hypothetical intellectual conversation among beholders in front of the ter Brugghen’s work. This hypothetical conversation is intended as an effective way to show in detail how the reception mechanism and process would work with regard to ter Brugghen’s St. Thomas.
