The purpose of this study is to examine whether the characteristics, such as transaction duration, dependency, interdependence, and communication, of transactions between SMEs and large firms affect the cooperation activities. We also examine whether cooperative activities influence cooperative performance. Finally, we attempt to analyze whether there is a mediating effect of cooperative activities in the relationship between transaction characteristics and cooperation performance. As the major findings, transaction characteristics, i.e., transaction period, interdependence, and communication, showed positive contribution to cooperation activities. It suggests the importance of the relationship between large and small businesses for successful cooperation activities. Dependency, however, had a negative impact on cooperative activities presumably due to lower levels of trust resulting from unfair trade practices. Cooperative activities had an effect on cooperation performance. In addition, cooperative activities showed the mediating effects on the relationship between transaction characteristics (transaction duration, interdependence, communication) and cooperation performance. These results show that transaction characteristics (transaction duration, interdependence, communication) contribute to cooperative activities. It can also suggest the importance of the relationship between large and small businesses for successful cooperation activities.

본 연구의 목적은 중소기업과 대기업의 거래특성인 거래기간, 전속성, 상호의존성, 커뮤니케이션이 협력활동에 미치는 영향관계를 검증하는 것이다. 또한 협력활동이 협력성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 이러한 협력활동이 거래특성과 협력성과와의 영향관계를 매개하는 효과를 추가적으로 분석한다. 분석 결과 첫째, 중소기업과 대기업 간 거래기간이 오래될수록 협력활동 수준이 증가되는 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 중소기업과 대기업간 전속성이 낮을수록 협력활동 수준이 증가되는 것으로 확인되었다. 셋째, 중소기업과 대기업간 상호의존성이 높을수록 협력활동 수준이 증가되었다. 넷째, 중소기업과 대기업간 커뮤니케이션 활동이 높을수록 협력활동 수준이 증가되었다. 다섯째, 중소기업과 대기업간 협력활동이 협력성과에 영향을 미치며 이러한 협력활동이 거래특성과 협력성과의 관계에 중요한 매개효과를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 선행연구의 발견을 중소기업과 대기업간의 협력활동 분야에 적용한 데에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 성공적 협력활동을 위해서는 중소기업과 대기업 간 신뢰와 믿음이 형성되기 위한 거래특성 요인이 선행되어야 함을 제안하였으며, 본 연구의 한계와 향후 연구방향을 논의하였다.
