The research study reviewed and understood all the literatures and books related to Donghak (Religion integrating folk beliefs and confucianism, taoism, and buddhism) that have been released by Japan up to now to describe the tendency of research about Donghak. All the dissertations that have been released in Japan were limited as an object to research. Those research books and literatures that have been published by Korean researchers in Japan were also included as another object to research. At the contemporary times when it has passed about 120 years since Donghak came to the fore, the need is raised to cognize how Korea and Japan view Donghak, in other words, the viewpoints of Donghak that the two countries have, for analyzing historical events of the past and investigating the truth of them are of importance, but the roles that Korea and Japan ought to perform in the international communities in the present and the future need to be considered, through it. The discussions about Donghak in Japan have been focused on the roles of the Japanese troops within the realm of Donghak, or Donghak and Asianism rather than Donghak itself. Since 2010, the Japan academic circles have conducted, in depth, a great deal of research about modernization that Japan accomplished, in concert with social pleasure in the Meiji era. Donghak was also considered a part of the research on it. Since 2000, Donghak was researched in association with particulars and local history. The research about it has been accomplished by exploring historical records and conducting local literature study and historical evidence. In this regard, this study described the main point, with the focus on the main issues and subjects at issue that have been raised since 2000, rather than dealing with general research about Donghak.

본 논고는 지금까지 일본에서 발표된 동학관련 제연구서들에 대한 검토와정리를 겸해, 연구동향을 기술했다. 연구서 선정은 일본 내에서 발표된 제논문으로 한정시키고, 한국의 연구자들이 일본에서 발표한 연구서들 역시 일부포함시켰다. 동학이 발생한지 어언 120여년이 지난 만큼 현시점에서 한일 양국이 동학을 어떻게 바라보고 있는지에 대한, 한일 양국의 시각을 인지할 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 과거의 역사적 사건을 분석하고 진실을 규명하는 것 역시 중요한 일이지만, 이를 통해 현재의 그리고 앞으로의 국제사회 속에서의 한국과일본의 역할을 고민할 필요가 있기 때문이기도 하다. 일본에서의 동학관련 논의는 동학 그 자체에 집중하기 보다는, 동학 안에서의 일본군의 역할이나 동학과 아시아주의에 관심을 가져왔다. 2010년 이후일본의 메이지시대의 사회적 향유와 맞물려 학계에서도 일본의 근대화에 대한 연구들이 심화되었다. 동학 역시 그 일환으로 다루어지고 있으며, 2000년이후 동학에 관한 연구는 각론과 지역사를 포함시켜 전개되고 있다. 또 사료발굴과 지역 문헌조사와 고증을 통해 연구성과를 내고 있다. 본고는 광범위한 동학연구 전체를 아우르기보다는, 2000년 이후의 주요 쟁점이 되거나, 이슈가 된 주제들을 중심으로 본문을 기술했다.
