In this paper, I tried to explore the possibility of a new logic that can grasp the world in an integrated way beyond Western formal logic and dialectic in Donghak ‘s ‘Bulyeon-kiyeon’. Formal logic in the West is a rule of thinking that must be understood in logical thinking, reasoning, and correct use of language. But the real world is complex, so there are many things that can not be grasped simply by formal logic. Hegel’s dialectic is a very good logic to explain the changes and trends of the situation through the logic of ‘thesis-antithesis-synthesis’. However, dialectic has also appeared as a thinking of domination-inclusion to synthesize the world as contradictions, confrontations, and struggles. On the other hand, Eastern logic deeply recognized the limitations of language, sense, and reasoning, and attempted to grasp the world as a whole with the logic of paradox. The ‘Bulyeon-kiyeon’ of Donghak inherits the tradition of this paradoxical logic of the Orient. The logic can be interpreted as ‘the logic of oppositioncoincidence’ and ‘the logic of Powell(包越)’ which affirms the difference and value of all things as an expression of the whole universe, and that the logic embraces and conforms to the whole. This Powell logic can be the logic of life and the logic of real integration,‘embraces and transcends’.

본고는 서양의 형식논리와 변증법을 넘어서 세계를 통합적으로 파악할 수있는 새로운 논리의 가능성을 동학의 ‘불연기연’에서 탐구하고자 하였다. 서양의 형식논리는 논리적 사고와 추론, 언어의 올바른 사용에 있어 반드시 알아야 하는 사유의 규칙이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 현실 세계는 복잡다단해서단순히 형식논리로 파악될 수 없는 부분 또한 많다. 헤겔의 변증법은 정반합의 논리를 통해 사태의 변화와 추이까지도 담아내고자 한 매우 탁월한 논리이긴 하지만 세계를 모순, 대립, 투쟁하는 양극단으로 설정하여 종합하려는 지배-포섭의 사유로 해석될 여지도 있었다. 반면 동양의 논리는 언어와 감각, 이성적 추론의 한계를 인식하고 역설의 논리로써세계를 통합적으로 파악하려고 하였다. 동학의 ‘불연기연(不然其然)’은 동양의 이러한 ‘역설의 논리’를 계승하면서 관찰검증의 방법과 직관, 이 양 측면의 통합적 인식의 필요성을 역설한 것으로볼 수 있다. 이는 이후 ‘반대일치의 논리’, ‘아니다, 그렇다’의 논리로 해석되면서 현상의 분열과 대립은 전체 우주의 한 표현일 뿐이며, 우주의 전일적 관점에서는 합치될 수 있다고 해석되었다. 이는 변증법과는 달리 각각의 존재의 다름과 그 고유한 가치를 긍정하면서 전체에 합치되게끔 하는 ‘포월의 논리’로 해석될 수 있다. 이러한 ‘불연기연’의 포월 논리는 변증법의 ‘부정을 통한 종합’과는 달리, ‘포용하면서 넘어서는’ 생명의 논리로 해석될 수 있으며, 이 시대의 분열과 갈등을 해소할 수 있는 ‘화해와 통합’의 논리로서 적극적으로 해석될 필요가 있다.
