The psychological approach to the prevention and countermeasure of crimes basically needs the prediction and analysis of whether a person is in danger of committing a crime, and the argument on psychological cause is having wide application in the field of enlightenment and correction of criminals. Thus, although the cause of the development of crime is being quite influenced by its background and environment, we need to examine and rectify people who have the characteristics to endanger society because of their mistaken minds and psychological causes. Therefore, the theory on psychological cause is a method of approach explaining the elements of crime based on an individual's mental condition and state, more centering on an individual's natural disposition or characteristic, rather than the effect of its environment. The psychological theory understands that all behaviors of human beings are caused by a psychological process, and having this theory as a background, the argument on psychological cause attempts to discover the cause of crime by explaining the abnormal mentality of a criminal, and pursue the source of crime through psychological and mental process. Also, this theory, nowadays as one of the widest research fields along with crime sociology, has contributed a lot in transforming punishment-based executions into improvement-based corrections, and is having much influence in punishment theories such as general prevention theories. Therefore, in this paper, we will investigate the psychological cause of crimes, and especially examine today's research trend of psychological causes, the four major causes which are explained in terms of depth psychology and crime, personality and crime, intelligence and crime, and mental disorder and crime.

일반적으로 발생하는 범죄는 우리사회의 현주소를 대변한다고 말할 수 있다. 최근 검거된 연쇄살인범과 연쇄성폭행범 발발이사건 등이 우리사회에 던진 충격과 공포는 엄청나다. 더구나 2004년 온 국민을 경악하게 하였던 유영철 사건이 일어난 중에서도 이와 동일한 극악무도한 범죄가 똑같은 하늘 아래에서 마치 스포츠 경주처럼 아무런 죄의식도 없이 경쟁적으로 버젓이 벌어지고 있었다니 놀랄만한 일이다. 이는 곧 우리사회 일각에 번지고 있는 은밀한 이상 징표로 우리사회의 어두운 치부가 되고 있다. 따라서 사회에 대한 막연한 불만과 분노가 범행동기가 되고 고귀한 인간의 생명이 파리 목숨보다 더 쉽게 여겨지는 이와 같은 흉악한 분위기가 조성된 원인은 여러 각도에서 이루어지겠지만 무엇보다도 범인성의 원천을 범죄자의 정신적 과정에서 찾아보는 것도 큰 의의가 있으리라 생각한다. 이러한 측면에서 본고에서는 범죄를 하도록 충동하는 정신적, 심리학적 배경과 과정을 추적해보고 이와 관련된 범죄유발심리요인에 관한 이론을 고찰해보았다. 그러나 범죄의 유발요인은 심리적요인 못지않게 주변여건과 환경에 의해서도 영향을 받고 있기 때문에 심리학적 원인만 가지고 범죄를 예측하고 범인성을 단정하는 것은 주의를 요하는 사항으로 다른 요소를 함께 고려하여 다양한 측면에서 연구되어야하겠다.
