In this article, I have seen that the postwar world is represented by the world of poverty and the world of affluence, centering on the two stories of “the marginal story of the river” and “the woman” that were treated as “intermediate novels”. I looked at how the impenetrable, loneliness and loneliness of women and men in these two worlds are expressed and sublimated in the work of ‘intermediate novel’. In the previous studies, it was found that the research on intermediate novels was hardly achieved compared with the pure literature of Kawabata, and the research papers were hard to find in Japan as well as in Korea. Therefore, we tried to challenge the untapped field of intermediate novel that discriminated against previous research. I examined the psychological state and changes of postwar women in Kawabata’s works. Since the characteristic of the female figure he painted was ‘beauty’, the descriptions and characteristics of the female characters and man characters in the works were more clear. As already mentioned, Kawabata’s “death” is based on experience, so the interpretation of the work was able to discover hidden subjects from another side. In both works, it was unusual for a beautiful woman to be central, and there was loneliness and loneliness in the wealth and the bean world that appeared in the postwar life, and the nannies that men and women should have felt there. At the same time, there was a dream. It is worth studying the intermediate novel, which is a new genre, in the hope that it will be an opportunity to discover ‘dreams’ in the lives of postwar women through the two works. 본고에서는 ‘중간소설’로 취급되었던 󰡔강이 있는 변두리 이야기󰡕와 󰡔여자라는 것󰡕두 작품을 중심으로 전후의 세계는 빈곤의 세계와 부유의 세계로 대변된다고 보았다. 이런 두 세계 속에서 느끼는 여자와 남자의 허무와 고독, 외로움이 어떻게 ‘중간소설’이라는 작품 속에 표현되고 승화되었는지를 살펴보았다. 선행연구를 살펴보아도 가와바타의 순수문학 작품에 비해 중간소설의 연구는 거의 이루어지지 못하고 있는 실정이었고, 연구 논문은 일본뿐만 아니라 국내에서는 찾아보기 힘들 정도이었다. 그렇기 때문에 선행연구와 차별을 두는 중간소설이라는 미개척 분야에 도전하고자 하였다. 두 작품을 대상으로 가와바타의 작품 속에 그려진 전후(戰後) 여성의 심리 상태 및 변화를 고찰해 보았다. 그가 그리는 여성상의 특징이 ‘아름다움’이었기에 작품 속 여자나 남자 등장인물의 묘사와 특성이 더욱 명확하게 보였다. 또한 이미 언급하였듯이 가와바타가 그리는 ‘죽음’은 경험을 바탕으로 되어있기에 작품의 해석도 또 다른 측면에서 숨겨진 주제를 발견할 수 있었다. 두 작품에는 공통적으로 아름다운 여자가 중심이라는 게 특이하고, 전후의 삶 속에 나타나는 부와 빈의 세계와 거기에서 남자나 여자가 느껴야 했던 남모를 고독이나 외로움이 있었다. 동시에 ‘꿈’도 있었다. 중간소설 연구가 일본은 물론이거니와 국내에서도 미약하지만, 두 작품을 통하여 전후의 여성들의 삶 속에서 ‘꿈’을 발견하는 계기가 되기를 바라는 마음에서 새로운 장르인 중간소설도 충분히 연구할 만한 가치가 있음을 새삼 인식하게 되었다.
