This study attempted to clarify emotional and cognitive processes leading to post-traumatic growth for those who experienced psychological trauma. A total of 203 adults over age 19 completed the survey consisting of the Event Related Rumination Inventory in Korean, Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule, Narrative Identity question measuring meaning, and Post-traumatic Growth Inventory. Results showed that parallel mediation model was adequately fitted, in which the relationship between rumination and posttraumatic growth were mediated by meaning making and positive/negative affect. Specifically, intrusive rumination failed to predict posttraumatic growth, while deliberative rumination had both direct and indirect effects on posttraumatic growth. Intrusive rumination predicted meaning making negatively and negative affect positively. Deliberative rumination was positively related to meaning making and positive affect. Finally, meaning making and positive affect predicted posttraumatic growth positively, and negative affect predicted it negatively. Results of this study can provide implication for developing psychotherapic programs to promote post-traumatic growth by illustrating the differential processes involved in the effect of rumination on post-traumatic growth.

본 연구는 외상을 경험한 사람들이 외상 후 성장에 도달하는 과정에서 반추 유형에 따라 어 떠한 인지적 및 정서적 경로를 거치는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 외상을 경험한 만 19세 이상의 성인 203명의 자료를 수집하였고, 사건 관련 반추, 긍정/부정 정서, 의미 부여를 평가하기 위한 서술적 정체성 문항, 외상 후 성장을 측정하였다. 구조방정식 분석 결과, 의미 부여와 긍정/부정 정서가 반추와 외상 후 성장 간의 관계를 독립적으로 매개하는 병렬매개모 형이 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 침습적 반추는 외상 후 성장을 예측하지 못하였으 나, 의도적 반추는 외상 후 성장에 대한 직접효과와 간접효과가 모두 유의하게 나타났다. 또 한 침습적 반추는 의미 부여를 부적으로, 부정 정서를 정적으로 예측하였고, 의도적 반추는 의미 부여를 정적으로, 긍정 정서를 정적으로 예측하였다. 한편, 의미 부여와 긍정 정서는 외 상 후 성장을 촉진시키는 반면, 부정 정서는 외상 후 성장에 부적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 반추가 외상 후 성장에 영향을 미치는 과정에 대해 밝힘으로써 향후 외상 후 성장 프로그램 개발을 위한 치료적 함의를 제공한다.
