There have been many research studies on Mikhail Lermontov’s 『A Hero of Our Time』. However, there still exist difference of opinions of whether this novel follows the romanticism trend of the times in the flow of Russian literature or whether the novel is a psychological novel and a classic example of new realism. Lermontov is known in Russian literature as a deep-thinking, observing and reflecting poet of not only himself but also contemporary people and Russia in general. It is not difficult to think that his parents’ unhappy marriage, his domineering grandmother, heartbreaks over struggles in love and other sufferings in his personal life had an impact on his self-observing and pessimistic behavior. Pechorin in 『A Hero of Our Time』 objectively depicts the typical contemporary poet. Lermontov contrasts past romantic experiences with the realism of Pechorin’s image, which is recognized as a change in Lermontov’s works. In other words, the theme ‘superfluous man’ found in 『Woe from Wit』 and 『Eugene Onegin』 is also found in 『A Hero of Our Time』, while demonic and Byronic features of the romantic protagonist is portrayed in psychological realism. Ginzburg argues that psychologism was derived from romanticism’s interest in the individual, but it overcame subjectivity by objectively observing the individual’s consciousness such as irony, self-observation and demonism. In other words, she emphasized that psychologism contrasts with romanticism although it was born from romantic poetry. Ginzburg argues that 『A Hero of Our Time』 is the beginning of Russian psychological novels and that the works of Turgenev, Goncharov, Dostoyevsky, and Tolstoy are psychological novels. Many researchers of Russian literature also argue the same view that 『A Hero of Our Time』 is the first psychological novel in Russian literature history. In other words, they argue that the main story of 『A Hero of Our Time』 is the psychological analysis of Pechorin, not the story of his personal events. Based on such argument, this paper studies whether the unique construct created by Lermontov defines the features of a psychological novel. The paper studies the importance and weight of 『A Hero of Our Time』 in Lermontov’s works, the definition of the concept ‘psychological novel,’ and the psychological features of Pechorin and other characters to determine whether there are grounds for it to be truly defined as a psychological novel.

『우리시대의 영웅』은 이제껏 많은 연구가 이루어져왔다. 하지만 여전 히 러시아 문학의 큰 흐름 속에서 낭만주의 조류의 발전을 이은 작품 인지, 새로운 리얼리즘의 표본으로서 등장한 심리소설 작품인지 의견이 분분하다. 레르몬토프는 자신은 물론 동시대인, 나아가 러시아 전반에 대해 항상 깊이 생각하며 관찰하는 반성의 시인으로서 러시아 문학계에 서 자리 잡고 있다. 이러한 그의 자기 관찰 적이자 염세적인 태도는 부 모의 불행한 결혼, 고압적인 조모, 대답 없는 사랑에 대한 비애 등 그 의 음울한 개인사가 영향을 미쳤을 것이란 점을 미루어 짐작하기는 어 렵지 않다. 더불어 『우리시대의 영웅』의 페초린은 동시대 시인의 전형 적인 모습을 객관적으로 묘사하고 있다. 레르몬토프는 과거의 낭만적 경험과 페초린 형상의 사실성을 대립시키고 있으며, 이는 레르몬토프의 작품세계의 새로운 변화로 인지된다. 다시 말해, 『우리시대의 영웅』에서 『지혜의 슬픔』과 『예브게니 오네긴』을 관통해 오는 ‘잉여인간’의 테마를 찾을 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 낭만적 주인공의 악마적이 고 바이런적인 특징이 심리적 사실주의로 대체되고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 긴즈부르그는, 심리주의는 개인에 대한 낭만주의의 관심에서 파생된 것 이지만, 개인적 의식이라 할 수 있는 아이러니, 자기관찰, 악마주의 등을 객관적으로 관찰함으로서 주관성을 극복해 냈다고 주장한다. 즉, 심리주의 는 낭만주의 시학을 기반으로 하여 형성되었으나 낭만주의와는 이미 대비 되는 위치를 점하고 있다는 점을 강조한 것이다. 때문에 그녀는 『우리시 대의 영웅』은 러시아 심리주의 소설의 시작이며 이후 투르게네프, 곤차로 프, 도스토예프스키, 톨스토이가 심리주의 소설의 대열로 들어선다고 강조 한다. 다수의 러시아 문학 연구자 역시 『우리시대의 영웅』을 러시아 문학 사에서 최초로 등장하는 심리주의 소설이라고 하며 긴즈부르그와 같은 의 견을 피력한다. 다시 말해 『우리시대의 영웅』은 페초린의 개인적 사건의 진행이 소설의 주축을 이루는 것이 아니라 그의 자아분석이 핵심인 것이다. 이를 기반으로 본 연구는 작가가 상정해놓은 독특한 구성이 심리소설 로서 작품의 특징을 규정할 수 있는지를 살펴보고, 이를 위하여 본 작품 이 레르몬토프의 작품세계에서 차지하는 비중, 심리소설이라는 개념의 정 의, 페초린과 다른 주인공의 심리적 특징 등을 살펴봄으로서 실제로 이 소설이 심리소설로 불릴 수 있는 근거가 되는 지점들을 논증하고 있다.
