Considering that ego integrity can be achieved by accepting both successes and failures from the past, the memories of the past experience would have an important impact on ego integrity. This study was designed to explore the link between the memory of the past experiences and ego integrity. The participants were interviewed about their past experiences and asked about their ego integrity, depression and life satisfaction. Although they all were satisfied with most of their past experiences and had positive memories, 80 percent of them were still unhappy and frustrated with their academic careers. In addition, their relationship with parents, marital satisfaction, and post-retirement life satisfaction have a static correlation with their ego integrity. It was also confirmed that the elderly with higher levels of ego integrity had lower levels of depression and higher levels of life satisfaction.

노년기자아통합은 깊은 성찰을 통해 과거의 성공과 실패를 모두 받아들임으로써 획득되어질 수 있 는 것이다. 따라서 자아통합에 과거 경험에 대한 기억은 중요한 영향을 미칠 것으로 보이지만 관련 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구는 과거 경험에 대한 기억과 노년기 자아통합과의 관련성을 알아보 고자 하였다. 이를 위해 노인복지관의 프로그램 참가자 40명, 봉사자 10명, 무료급식 수혜자 10명을 대상으로 부모와의 관계, 형제와의 관계, 학업과 학업 후의 생활에 대한 만족, 결혼생활 만족과 자녀 와의 관계, 직장과 가사 일에 대한 만족 그리고 은퇴 후 생활에 대한 인터뷰를 실시하였고, 자아통합, 우울, 삶의 만족도에 대한 설문을 실시하였다. 그 결과 노인들은 대부분의 과거 경험에 대해 만족하 며 긍정적으로 기억하고 있었으나, 학업기간에 대해서만 80%의 노인들이 여전히 만족하지 못하고 아쉬움을 지니는 것으로 확인되었다. 또 과거 경험 중에서 부모와의 관계와 결혼생활의 만족도 그리 고 은퇴 후 삶에서의 만족도가 자아통합과 정적인 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 자아통합의 수준 이 높은 노인일수록 우울감은 낮고, 삶의 만족도는 높은 것으로 확인되었다.
