As a way to understand contemporary adolescents’ Internet culture, this study aims to explore how adolescents want to communicate with their teachers and peers on religious educational websites. In order to examine their preferred communications styles, this study develops a survey questionnaire on the Internet and asks adolescents to check their degree of preference for a particular way of communication on a five-point interval scale. The questionnaire consists of six sections, contrasting six characteristics of two communication models: transmission model and constructivist model: active vs. passive, cognitive vs. holistic, one-way vs. interactive, authoritative vs. democratic, individual vs. collaborative, and open vs. closed ways of communication. Each section has four statements that form two pairs of questions: one pair related to a constructivist model and the other to a transmission model of communication. Using diverse sampling methods, 464 adolescents from all over the world responded to the web survey and the results of data analysis reveal that most of adolescent respondents tend to prefer more active, holistic, interactive, democratic, collaborative and open ways of communication as of a constructivist model when using religious educational websites. Some respondents also express their preference for some of the characteristics of the transmission model. The results demonstrate some meaningful difference in their responses according to their age, gender, denomination, ethnicity, location, and Internet use. It calls for further study using a qualitative research method such as in-depth interview. The results of this study may provide empirical knowledge about contemporary adolescents’ Internet culture and suggest direction for future development of adolescent religious educational websites.

인터넷은 현대 청소년들의 만남의 장소이며 새로운 문화의 산실이다. 청소년들의 생활에서 인터넷이 차지하는 비중이 커지면서 인터넷을 새로운 종교교육의 장이자 도구로 활용할 수 있는 방안에 대한 종교교육자들의 관심도 높아지고 있다. 인터넷 상에서 보다 효과적인 종교교육이 이루어지기 위해서는 웹사이트를 제작하기에 앞서 인터넷이라는 커뮤니케이션 매체에 대한 이해와 함께 그것을 사용하는 청소년들의 인터넷 문화에 대한 이해가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 전통적인 교육 환경과는 질적으로 다른 사이버공간에서 청소년들은 어떻게 행동하고 있는지, 교사와는 어떤 식으로 상호작용하기를 원하는지, 어떤 방법으로 학습하기를 원하는지를 알 수 있다면 보다 효과적인 인터넷 종교교육 프로그램을 개발할 수 있을 것이다. 본고에서는 이에 관한 실증적이고 구체적인 정보를 얻기 위해 인터넷을 활용한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 다양한 표본 추출방법을 통하여 12-18세의 종교교육관련 웹사이트 사용 경험이 있는 464명의 청소년들이 설문에 응했다. 그 결과 다수의 청소년 응답자들은 인터넷 상의 종교교육 프로그램에서 보다 구성주의적 모델의 특성들인 능동적, 전인적, 상호작용적, 민주적, 협동적, 개방적 커뮤니케이션 양식을 선호하는 경향이 두드러졌으며 동시에 부분적으로 전수모델의 특성들도 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 본고는 이러한 설문 조사 분석 결과를 토대로 청소년들을 대상으로 한 인터넷 종교교육 프로그램이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하였다.
