The purpose of this study is to analyzes the impact of police numbers and the economy on crime rate in Korea by examining the annual rates of five major crimes from 1964 to 2015. We tries to review the annual trends of police and crime in our nation, to examine the relationship of police and crime. These analysis are based on current official crime rates. The data that we have analysed here is obtained from official crime statistics. ‘Analytical Report on Crime’, which is published annually by the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office and ‘Police Annual Statistics’ by Korean National Police Agency in Korea. VECM analysis on the years 1964 to 2015 shows that, in the short run, economic fluctuation as well as police force strengthening have an impact on crime rate. Previous year’s crime rate also is the important factor for criminal law crime. In the long run, however, economic fluctuation and police force strengthening do not have an impact on murder, robbery, rape, violence, and larceny.

오래된 연구주제중의 하나인 경제와 범죄와의 관계 그리고 경찰력과 범죄와의 관 계를 VECM을 이용하여 새로운 시도를 하여 이론적, 정책적으로 시사점을 제공하는 것이 이 연구에서의 새로운 시도라고 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 5대 주요범죄와 경 제적 변화 및 경찰력 변화와의 관계를 지난 52년간의 시계열자료를 이용하여 밝히고 자 한다. 단기적으로 5대 범죄 범죄율을 낮추고자 하는 경찰예산의 증가나 경찰 수의 증가는 명백한 효과를 보이지는 않는다. 경제적 지표의 변화로 인하여 단기적으로 범 죄율이 변동한다는 명확한 증거도 역시 제시되지는 않는다. 단기적으로는 경제지표의 변화와 경찰력지표의 변화가 범죄율의 변화와 연동된다는 증거를 찾을 수는 없다. 장 기적으로 볼 때는 소득지표와 경기지표는 5대 범죄발생에 부분적으로 영향을 미치는 것이 확인되었다. 경찰력의 강화는 장기적으로 절도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되 었다. 장기적으로 강간, 폭력, 절도와 같은 범죄에 대해서 부분적으로 경제지표와 경 찰력지표가 영향을 미치는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
