This provides alternative forms of Christian (pastoral) care and the roles of Christian (pastoral) counselors based on a multifaceted diagnosis of current societal trends in Korea and the resulting psychological state of Koreans. I diagnose current societal trends in Korea by exploring the major challenges each generational group faces: young adults give up on achieving milestones in life in order to survive; married women are pushed out of the workforce if they choose to raise children; the elderly encounter high rates of poverty and suicide rates among this age group are high. Many Koreans think that their society is unfair and feel that they live in an extremely competitive environment. In this oppressive social structure, I observe that Koreans feel 'anxiety' and 'anger.' The ideal form of Christian care is to respond appropriately to the pain and anguish of Koreans. As to dealing with the emotion of anger and anxiety, I suggest three alternative roles of Christian (pastoral) counselors as a way of providing effective care:1) as a professional 2) as an empathic selfobject and 3) as providing multiple images of care-especially through the metaphor of 'Midwife' and 'Gardener.'

본 연구의 목적은 현재 한국사회에 대한 다각적인 진단을 토대로 한 한국인의 심리상태를 파악하고, 그에 맞추어 제공되어야 할 기독(목회)상담자의 돌봄에 대한 대안적인 역할을 제시하고자 하는 것이다. 오늘의 한국사회 진단을 위해서 N포세대의 청년세대, 1인 가구, 노령화세대의 노인빈곤과 자살, 기혼여성의 경력단절과 가사노동 현실 등 각 세대별로 직면한 삶의 문제들을 짚어보았다. 다수의 한국인들은 자신이 살고 있는 사회를 불평등하고 불공정한 사회라고 생각하고 자신들이 생존을 위한 극도의 경쟁 속에서 산다고 느낀다. 이러한 사회구조 아래 한국인들이 느끼는 사회적 좌절감에서 기인하는 감정들 중에서 세대적으로 나타나는 공통의 감정을 연구자는 ‘불안’과 ‘분노’라고 진단한다. 현재 한국사회에 대한 진단이 ‘불평등과 경쟁이라는 사회구조가 가져온 불안과 분노라면, 이에 대해 기독(목회)상담은 무엇을 제공할 수 있을까? 불안과 분노가 주는 고통스러운 마음에 응답하는 것이 기독(목회)상담의 역할이다. 불안과 분노의 감정에 대한 보다 효과적인 돌봄을 제공하기 위해 요구되는 기독(목회)상담가의 역할에 대해 연구자는 1) 사회적 진단과 신학적 성찰의 전문가로서의 상담가, 2) 불안과 분노를 수용해주는 공감적 자기대상(Empathic Selfobject)으로서의 상담가, 그리고 3)내담자의 상황에 맞는 다양한 돌봄의 이미지-산파와 정원사-를 적절히 제공하는 상담가라고 제안한다.
