The present study is aimed to explore ‘religious Public Nature’ the Secular Saints’ Wednesday Meetings (SSWMs) try to demonstrate through their worship services. The primary data for this study include the homepage and the bulletin for the worship services used by the SSWMs. As the meetings are for ‘Canaan Christians,’ a term for Korean Christians who do not go to church, the cause for the increase in their number has been credited for the ‘privatization’ of churches. Starting as an out-of-church alternative to the privatization of churches serving as fundamental cause for all problems in the church, e.g. finance, transmission by heredity, power and classes, the SSWMs set up the proposition that they shall hold a goal critical to the privatization. With judgement that it is ‘public religiosity,’ the study has analyzed to prove it. As the homepage of SSWMs publicizes in detail that the purpose of the meetings is religious publicity and the order of the worship service is clearly expressive of this purpose, the study analyses and explains them. The meetings summarize their purpose of worshipping as “to worship on the scene of battles, on the streets, taking the challenge and acting in regards to social responsibilities.” The sermons of these meetings are void of terms for wishes, such as blessings, grace, or success, and other concepts are interpreted as meaning social changes. The content of the sermons are aimed to change churches and the society. The titles for prayer are confined to events happening in the world and the society, and the points of time and space the prayer titles appear and disappear demonstrate the perspectives of these meetings towards the world. The order of worship services has been analyzed to analyze the public nature of the religion contained in it. The study may illuminate how the SSWMs demonstrate the public nature of a religion in contract to the privatization phenomena of churches.

이 연구의 목적은 〈세속성자 수요모임〉이 예배를 통해서 드러내고자 하는 ‘신앙 공공성’을 탐구하는데 있다. 이 연구를 위한 1차 자료는 이 모임의 인터넷 홈페이지와 예배, 순서지이다. 이 모임은 ‘가나안 성도’를 대상으로 하므로 이들이 증가하는 원인 중 하나를 교회의 ‘사사화’로 보았다. 교회의 ‘사사화’를 한국 교회의 모든 문제의 근원적 요인중 하나로 보고 교회 밖 대안 운동으로 시작한 〈세속성자 수요모임〉은 이에 대한 비판적 목적을 가질 것이라는 가설을 세웠다. 이를 ‘신앙의 공공성’으로 판단하고 이들의 예배를 분석함으로 이를 증명했다. 인터넷 홈페이지는 이 모임이 신앙의 공공성을 목적으로 한다는 것을 상세하게 공개하고 있고 예배의 순서에는 이 목적이 분명하게 의도되어 있어서 이를 분석한 후 설명하였다. 이 모임은 예배드리는 목적을 “투쟁의 현장에서, 거리에서 예배드리며 사회적 책임에 대한 도전과 실천을 감당”하는 것이라고 요약하고 있다. 이 모임의 설교에는 ‘축복’,‘은혜’,‘성공’과 같은 기복적 용어들이 사용되지 않았고 다른 개념들은 사회적 변화의 의미로 해석되었으며 내용은 교회와 사회를 변화시키려는 목적이 있었다. 기도제목은 세계와 사회의 일들만을 대상으로 했으며 기도제목이 나타났다가 사라지는 시점과 위치는 이 모임이 어떤 관점으로 세상을 보는 가를 알려준다. 그 외 순서를 분석해서 이에 포함되어 있는 신앙의 공공성을 분석했다. 이 연구를 통해 교회의 사사화 현상과 대조적으로 〈세속성자 수요모임〉이 신앙의 공공성을 어떻게 드러내는지를 알 수 있다.
