This study investigated the differences of private education perception, satisfaction and stress between gifted and general children's mother. most of the elementary school students were receiving private education for academic studies, and private education was concentrated on English and mathematics, so that they were interested in education for upper secondary school or college entrance examinations. In addition, both mothers of gifted children and general children had high satisfaction level of private education However, mothers of gifted children showed substantially higher level of stress than general children on private education related matters. They recognize that gifted children cannot sustain their intellectual needs only through public education, and thus it is essential to let mothers of gifted children know about institutions and education available for gifted children. As for the case of Korea’s education system, it is nearly impossible to tackle private education sector and surrounding issues through public policy and education. Therefore, it is fundamental for the parents to have access to education for themselves to enhance their understanding on education while helping them to take control of their children’s education to ultimately provide right types of education which would be most suitable for their children.

이 연구는 영재아동 어머니와 일반아동 어머니의 ‘사교육에 대한 인식’, ‘사교육에 대한 만족도’, ‘사교육 스트레스’에 대한 차이를 조사하였다. 연구결과, 대다수의 초등학생들이 학과 학습을 위한 사교육을 받고 있음이 확인 되었고, 사교육이 영어와 수학에 많은 시간이 집중되어 있어 상급학교 진학이나 대학입시를 위한 사교육에 관심이 많다는 것도 알 수 있었다. 또한 영재아동 어머니들과 일반아동 어머니들 모두 사교육에 만족도가 높은 반면, 영재아동 어머니들은 일반아동 어머니들에 비해 사교육 스트레스를 더 많이 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 영재아동들은 공교육만으로는 부족하다는 것을 인식하고 영재아동 어머니들에게 영재교육에 관련된 정보가 제공되어야 함을 보여준다. 이와 같이 우리나라 교육현실에서 사교육의 문제를 정부의 정책만으로 해결하는 것은 한계가 있음을 인식하고 부모들에게 사교육에 대한 바른 이해와 주체적인 자녀 교육관을 가지고 자녀들에게 꼭 필요한 교육을 제공할 수 있도록 부모교육 기회의 확대가 필요하다고 제언한다.
