The purpose of this thesis is to visualize psychological state and storytelling of two heroines in the domestically and internationally acclaimed movie, , through analyzing the symbolism in their hair styles. The method of this study is to analyze the symbolic functions and roles given to the two heroines (Hideko, Nam Sookhi) of the movie through their hair styles. Research literature includes domestic and international publications for theoretic consideration, and VOD data, press release, and online resources for character analysis. The analysis was conducted by dividing Hideko’s hair styles into five categories, and Nam Sookhi’s into four categories. Through this thesis, we could understand and recognize that hair style in the movie help give depth and life into the characters, and also function as a visual aid for the narrative flow. There are three critical points in this study. First, only two characters are focused in this study. So this study can’t be used as a study of whole movie symbolism. Second, there wasn’t direct communication with ChanWook Park (the movie director) and JongHee Song (the make up director). From now on study includes direct communication with the movie director is expected. This kind of study could be important data to future movie industry and character design industry.

현대 영화에서 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 헤어스타일 분장의 상징성을 영화 <아가씨>를 통해 연구하는데 본 논문의 목적이 있다. 연구 방법으로는 영화 <아가씨>를 대상으로 영화의 두 여주인공인 히데코와 남숙희를 선정하여 헤어스타일 요소가 지닌 상징적 기능 및 역할을 분석 하였다. 이론적 고찰은 국내외 단행본 및 선행연구, 전문서적 등의 문헌 연구를 중심으로 하였고, 캐릭터 분석을 위해서는 VOD자료, 인터넷 기사 및 보도 자료를 참고하였다. 히데코의 헤어스타일은 5가지로, 남숙희의 헤어스타일은 4가지로 나누어 각 헤어스타일로 유추할 수 있는 인물들의 신분, 성장배경, 변화하는 심리상태, 앞으로의 복선 등을 분석하였고, 각 헤어스타일 연출 방법에 대한 상세한 연구를 진행하였다. 히데코가 극 초반부에 하고 나오는 웨스턴식 업스타일, 생머리, 니혼가미 등은 귀족적이며 비밀을 숨기고 있는 그녀의 신분과 심리상태를 보여주고, 극 중반부의 부스스한 생머리는 심리상태가 변화하고 있으며 그에 따라 불안해진 내면을 보여준다, 극 후반부의 남장 숏컷 스타일은 독립적이고 능동적인 주체로서 그녀의 삶을 개척해 갈 것임을 유추할 수 있게 해준다. 남숙희는 영화 속 대부분 댕기머리를 하고 나오는데 이것으로 남숙희가 조선의 하녀라는 성장배경과 태생을 알 수 있다. 남숙희 역시 극 후반부로 가면 더 이상 부스스한 생머리나 댕기머리가 아닌, 깔끔한 올림머리를 하고 나온다. 이로써 남숙희가 더 이상 조선의 하녀가 아니라 새로운 신분으로 새로운 환경에서 살게 될 것임을 알 수 있다. 본 연구를 통해 영화 <아가씨> 속 캐릭터 헤어스타일이 감독이 창조하고자 했던 캐릭터에 생명력을 불어 넣었으며, 영화의 흐름을 효과적으로 이해시키는 수단의 역할을 했음을 알 수 있었다.
