Today, in many cases, creative and various designs come out when traditional and modern cultures are combined. This is a kind of trend and it is also found in Korean Art. Many Korean artists are getting interested in Korean traditional culture. Min-hwa, Korean Folk Painting, is a genre of art which is created for the common people. In addition, artists used different symbols in Min-hwa. Hwa-jo-hwa, a type of Min-hwa, is marked by the use of flowers and birds. Furthermore, it inspires modern artists to use Hwa-jo-hwa to make unique designs. Min-hwa reflects the common people's hopes, values, traditions and history. It can show special symbols of the culture of a particular era. Therefore, studying Min-hwa and Hwa-jo-hwa can contribute to developing new and aesthetic designs in Hair Art. This study is focused on how Hwa-jo-hwa depicts cultures and beauty of a particular era and on developing creative Hair Art designs using waste hair. It is based on previous theses, resources on the Internet, books and an empirical study. The study introduces five aesthetic Hair Art works which used waste hair and depicted flowers of pomegranate, camellia, peony, apricot flowers and lotus flowers. It helps to understand what Hwa-jo-hwa illustrates and provides new opportunities about using waste hair in artworks. As a result, this study is expected to contribute developing various Hair Art designs, and more studies about Hair Art using different kinds of methods, creative ways, and various motives.

오늘날 디자인의 발달은 현대와 전통의 문화가 뒤섞이어 재해석하는 과정을 거치며 다양한 디자인을 창조해내는 경향성을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 움직임에 영향을 받아 우리 나라에서도 많은 예술가와 작가들의 관심이 고조되어 과거와 다르게 전통문화 의 중요성이 재인식 되고 있다. 전통문화 중에서도 민화 화조화는 화가나 작업자에게 무한한 영감을 주어 다양하고 독창적인 디자인을 만들 수 있는 소재로 적당하게 작 용한다. 민화는 각 나라 전통이나 역사를 잘 반영하고 있으며, 그 문화가 가지고 있는 특별한 상징성을 잘 보여주고 있다. 한국의 민화는 우리 민족 문화의 결과로 신앙, 정 서, 관습, 종교, 생활미를 담고 있는 미 양식적 표현으로 민족 역사의 흐름으로 의미 를 전달하고 있다. 따라서 한국 민화 화조화의 특성을 개발 연구하는 것은 무한한 디 자인 개발과 같이 다양한 분야로 넓혀 갈 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이론적 고 찰을 통해 화조화가 가지는 조형성과 상징성을 배경으로 폐 모발을 재활용하여 헤어 아트와 접목하여 창의적인 디자인개발을 표현해내는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법으 로는 선행논문, 인터넷자료, 관련서적과 단행본 등 문헌연구와 실증적 연구를 병행하 였다. 실증적 연구는 작품제작에 폐 모발을 재활용하여 민화 화조화에 따라 각각 응 용하여 조형미와 헤어아트를 접목하여 총 5작품을 제작하였다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 통하여 한국 민화 화조화 속에 담겨 있는 의미에 대하여 이해할 수 있었으며 이를 폐 모발을 재활용하여 헤어아트에 접목하여 독창적이고 창의적인 디자인으로 표현해 낼 수 있었다. 또한 이번 작품제작이 다양한 헤어아트와 전시물로 이용 될 수 있는 새로 운 디자인 연구 개발의 매개체가 될 수 있으리라 사료되며, 전통 한국 민화에 대한 관심과 헤어아트디자인에 활용할 수 있는 다양한 소재의 표현기법과 창의적인 디자 인 개발을 위해 심도 있는 헤어아트의 연구가 지속되기를 기대한다.
