This paper is written to analyze the theoretical and practical sides of the relations between South Korea and China. For this purpose, it explains the survival strategy of a small nation based on alliance and partnership relations. It analyzes the background and reality of the South Korea-China relation and examines the theories by applying them to the controversy over the deployment of the US THAAD systems. As a result, this paper found that China considered South Korea the enemy of its ally, North Korea, and an ally of its global rival, the US, although South Korea expected a kind of cooperation even on security issues. The regional structure in the Cold War era did not change in spite of South Korean wish. This paper analyzed that the controversy over the deployment of the US THAAD systems between South Korea and China since June 2014 had been a good example of the abovementioned real nature of South Korea-China relationship. South Korea Should rely its national security on the US while recognizing the limit of its relationship with China. It should try to strengthen the cooperation and exchange with China mainly on economy, people and culture.

본 논문은 한중관계에 있어서 기대와 실제의 격차를 분석해보기 위한 목적으로 작성되었다. 이를 위하여 동맹과 동반자관계를 중심으로 하는 약소국의 생존전략을 이론적으로 설명하였고, 이에 근거하여 한중관계의 경과와 실태를 분석하였다. 그리고 사드배치를 둘러싼 논란을 통하여 위에서 도출된 내용의 타당성을 검증하였다. 분석의 결과 한국은 중국과의 “전략적 협력 동반자관계”를 체결함으로써 안보 차원의 협력까지 확대되기를 기대하였으나 실제에 있어서 중국은 한국의 적대국인 북한의 동맹국이고, 중국 또한 한국을 세계적 차원에서 경쟁하고 있는 미국의 동맹국으로 인식하고 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 한국이 직시하지 않으려 하지만, 실제에 있어서도 냉전시대와 유사한 구도가 변화되지 않고 있다. 특히 2016년 6월부터 3년 정도를 논란을 벌였고, 아직도 확실하게 종료되었다고 볼 수 없는 사드배치를 둘러싼 한중 간의 논란은 위에서 분석한 한중관계의 본질을 잘 대변하는 사례라고 분석하였다. 한국은 한중관계의 이러한 한계를 명확하게 인식한 상태에서 안보는 한미동맹에 의존하면서 경제, 사회, 문화 등의 분야에서 중국과 협력한다는 자세를 가질 필요가 있다.
