This paper aims to explore the cardinal properties of Chol-Woo Chon’s entrepreneurship and his strategies for establishing GOHYANG FS Co., Ltd., (GOHYANG) as there are few concrete case studies on North Korean defectors’ entrepreneurship and startup strategies. The characteristics of Chon’s entrepreneurship were: ① creative ideas originated from curiosity; ② rapid decision making ability and strong driving force; ③ constant try; ④ high academic ability and continuous learning; and ⑤ high adaptability to Korean society. Also, founding strategies of GOHYANG included: ① prioritizing customer satisfaction; ② excellent storytelling; ③ selection and concentration; ④ items resistant to depression; and ⑤ pursuing synergy. More cases of North Korean defector entrepreneurs need to be reviewed to elaborate the ‘entrepreneurship and startup of North Korean defectors’.

본 논문은 대표적인 북한이탈주민 1세대 기업가인 전철우의 기업가정신과 ㈜고향FS의 창업전략의 특성을 살펴보고자 한다. 그것은 기업가정신이나 창업전략에 대한 사례연구 를 통해 북한이탈주민 예비창업자들에게 시사점을 제공하는 연구가 드물었기 때문이다. 연구결과, 전철우의 대표적인 기업가정신의 특성은 ① 호기심에서 비롯된 기발한 발상, ② 신속한 의사결정과 과감한 추진력, ③ 끊임없는 도전, ④ 높은 학력과 지속적인 학습, ⑤ 한국 사회에 대한 높은 적응력이었고, ㈜고향FS의 구체적 창업전략은 ① 고객만족 최우선화, ② 탁월한 스토리텔링, ③ 선택과 집중, ④ 불경기에 강한 아이템의 지속적 발굴, ⑤ 시너지 효과 추구로 압축할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 계기로 ‘북한이탈주민의 기업가 정신과 창업’이라는 현상을 세밀히 규명하기 위한 다양한 탈북기업가들의 사례를 검토해 나가는 노력이 필요하며, 이는 이 분야에 관한 학술적·실무적 논의를 보다 활성화 할 수 있을 것이다.
