This article is to study the role of vigorous immigration of modern age in the genesis of new art. Thus, for the purpose of this study I have examined various art theories and it’s features in instances of art. Homi Bhabha, post-colonial theorist, asserted that the creation of culture appears in the cleft of boundaries and transition, where the process of exchanging different cultures, create new art. He mentioned that this transition is similar to the conflict of identities and the identities of the creator are mimicry, hybridity and ambivalence. Through this process, something of a novelty is birthed, something that is impossible for natives to create. Rhee Seund ja, she had similar characters in this respect. As Korean artist she firstly migrated to France and worked. Between Korea and France, she committed all her strength and energy to create novelty art. She continuously administered herself ambivalence that affect her work. She worked across boundaries, applying the spirit of the east and the technique of the west, the hybridity of engraving and painting, the co-working of writers. Rhee's works was first acknowledged in France before being recognized in Korea. I consider her art to be influenced by number of factors: the French abstract art, which succeeded in the local art community; how to influence both Korea and France; and how other artists would observe the art standing in the same position, in the future.

본 논문은 오늘날 활발해진 인간의 이주가 미술에서 새로움이 창조되는 지점에서 어떠한 역할을 하였는가를 연구하기 위하여 작성되었다. 이 연구를 진행하며 이주에 대한여러 이론가들의 이론을 검토해 보았고, 이 이론들이 미술에서 어떠한 특징을 지니고 나타나는지 살펴보았다. 이러한 사상가들 중 하나인 호미 바바는 문화의 창조가 경계의 틈과 같은 곳에서 발생하며 서로 다른 문화를 주고받는 과정인 전이를 거쳐 새로운 미술이등장하게 된다고 하였다. 호미 바바가 언급한 전이는 두 정체성이 충돌하는 과정과 유사하며 창조자의 정체성은 흉내내기, 혼종성, 양가성과 같은 특징을 가지고 있다. 이 과정의 결과 토착민은 창작할 수 없는, 기존에 없던 새로운 것이 등장하게 된다. 이와 유사한성향을 보이며 창작 활동을 한 최초로 도불하여 정착하고 활동한 미술가인 이성자가 있다. 이성자는 한국과 프랑스의 틈에서 새로운 미술을 창조하는데 힘을 기울였다. 끊임없이 자기의 정체성에 양가성을 부여하였고 이러한 특징이 작품에 반영 되어 있다. 또한동양의 정신과 서양의 기법, 판화와 회화의 혼종된 표현 그리고 문학인과의 협업 작업등 작품 창작 활동에 있어서 지속적으로 각종 경계를 허물어 나가며 작품을 창작하였다. 이성자의 작품 활동은 프랑스에서 인정을 받은 후, 한국에 알려져 양국을 오가며 많은전시를 하였다. 프랑스의 추상 미술을 한국에 추상 미술이 도입되기 이전에 배워 현지화단에서 성공시킨 그의 미술이 한국과 프랑스에서 어떠한 영향을 주고 받았으며, 향후그와 같은 위치에 서 있는 다른 미술가들을 어떻게 바라보아야 하는지에 대한 고찰을 하였다.
