Park Wanso is full of vigilance against ideology: she never advertises herself as belonging to any doctrine. The sharp insight and introspective consciousness manifested in her literature determines the social critical character of her works, and also decides the realistic attitude in her novels of abandoning fantasy and confronting the world, this is also ture of the love created in her work. “Love” emphasizes the level of relationship; therefore, love affairs are intimately connected to the times. The period of Park Wansos’ works can be roughly divided into the Korean War period and industrial society period. In Park’s novels, the love in these two periods seems to be different and extremely similar, with characteristics of “de-romanticism” embodied in novels from which love fantasies are thrown away. War does not only destroy people’s living environments, it also has a tremendous impact on people’s outlook on life. The protagonist in The Naked Tree falls into an “alternative” love since he lost kinsfolk in the war, which is actually a kind of compensation psychology for family bond. In The Man’s House, the protagonist chooses as stable life over the romantic first-love. These two works were written many years apart, but both reflect the love view destroyed by war. During a period of war in which the most basic living conditions cannot be guaranteed, if the protagonist chooses “practical” love due to self-preservation, then the “ostentatious” marriage in industrial society is solely due to the destruction of people’s value systems by money worship. There is an increasing phenomenon of treating marriage as a tool for raising status. Park Wanso’s fiction implies that it is the blind worship of money and material things that results in the impossibility of romantic love; and meanwhile, it also implies that it is impossible to be happy in a marriage lacking love. Moreover, in addition to the popularity of money worship, the specifics of phenomenon of “colonization in life world” appearing under the industrial social background also include the neat and uniform lifestyle in the metropolis. Park Wanso mainly demonstrates the “uniform” lifestyle through the “apartment” in the metropolis. In the novel, the middle-class housewife living in apartment attempts to find a rebellious breach through extramarital sex. However, coincidentally, their plans eventually end up with failure. The sex not enrolled in marriage system itself means the inevitability of failure, and their behavior represents the impossibility of both overturning the existing lifestyle and realizing romantic love.
