This writing considers the characteristic of the rites of sisik (施食, banquet) complied by Baek Youngsung in the early 20th century, both the structural and the cognitive aspects. Intially, the original scriptures and standard of the rites of sisik, the rites in Korean Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism were examined, on which the features of those edited by BaekYoungsung are based. The structural characteristic of Back Younsung's is that Yakrye(略禮; The ritual in brief) consists of 2 chapters and Gwangrye (廣禮, The ritual in full detail) is made up of 12 chapters, which makes their meaning simple and clear, unlike Mongsan sisik uigwe (蒙山施食儀軌, The manual for sisik by Rev. Mongsan)which is composed of 3 chapters and 6 sections. The ritual orations of the rites of sisik in other Korean Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism do nothave this structure Next, the cognitive characteristic of his work are considered and how he utilizes the number of dharma systematically to correctly reveal its idea. Sentient beings never fails to get enlightened, because there is division between Buddha and sentient beings even though all have one mind. Therefore, Yakrye puts emphasis on enlightenment in Ilsimimun(一心二門, one mind two gates), encouraging them to be free from the six samsaric destinies and to take the stage of sages, and setting chanting Amitabha 7 times.

이 글은 20세기 초반 백용성 선사에 의해 편수된 시식의식의 특성을 구조적인 측면과 인식적인 측면으로 살핀 연구이다. 먼저 시식의식의 원초 경궤와 중국과 한국불교의 시식의식 등을 고찰하여 백용성 편수 시식의식의 특징을 살피는 근거로 삼았다. 구조적인 측면의 특성은, 3장 6분단으로 분장되는 <몽산시식의>와 달리 2장의 <약례>와 12장으로 분장된 <광례>에는 간편하면서도 분명하게 그 의미를 부각하며 분장되어 있다는 것이다. 이는 중국불교나 한국불교의 시식의식 의문에서는 볼 수 없는 양상이라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 인식적인 측면의 특성은, 모두 일심을 가지고 있지만 중생과 부처로 나눠지듯 중생은 반드시 깨침을 얻어야 하므로 <약례>에서 깨침을 강조하는 일심이문의 모습이나, 육도중생을 넘어 성현의 자리를 권하면서 7편의 아미타불 염불을 시설하는 것 등, 정연하게 법수를 활용하여 올곧게 사상을 드러내는 것이다.
