Based on the salmon conservation project and the salmon industry in Korea and Japan, this study examined the possibility of improving Korea’s salmon festival. South Korea lacks national interest in salmon conservation projects, and the domestic salmon industry is being implemented mainly by imported salmon. On the other hand, Japan has invested heavily in salmon conservation projects around the world. As a result, the salmon industry through the natural salmon returning to the Japanese territorial waters has activated. There are no special differences in the programs comprising the salmon festival in Korea and Japan, but the Japanese salmon festivals have a variety of facilities such as museums and restaurants which can convey histories and traditions of the festival to visitors. Development of such amenities will be indispensable for sustainable management of the salmon festival. Japan’s case suggests that Korean salmon festival should be accompanied by the salmon’s historical considerations, salmon conservation projects, and the growth of the salmon industry through natural salmon catch.

본 연구에서는 한국과 일본의 연어보존사업과 연어산업을 바탕으로 연어축제를 비교 분석함으로써 한국의 연어축제의 발전가능성을 모색하였다. 한국은 연어보존사업에 대한 국가적 관심이 부족하고, 수입 연어를 중심으로 국내 연어산업이 이루어지고 있는 실정이다. 반면, 일본은 세계적으로 연어보존사업에 막대한 투자를 실행하고 있으며, 그 결과 일본 해역으로 회귀하는 자연산 연어를 통한 연어산업이 활성화되어 있다. 연어축제를 구성하는 프로그램은 한국과 일본의 축제에서 특별한 차이는 없으나, 일본의 연어축제는 축제의 역사와 전통을 스토리텔링해 줄 수 있는 박물관, 식당 등의 부대시설들이 다양한 내용으로 구축되어 있다. 이러한 어메니티의 확충은 연어축제의 지속가능한 운영을 위해 필수적이며, 일본의 사례는 한국의 연어축제를 발전시키기 위해 연어의 역사적인 고찰, 연어보존사업, 자연산 연어를 통한 연어산업의 활성화가 동반되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.

本研究では、韓国と日本の鮭保存事業と鮭産業に基づいて鮭祭りを比較分析することにより、韓国の鮭祭りの発展の可能性を模索した。韓国は鮭保存事業の国家的関心が乏しく、輸入鮭を中心に、国内の鮭産業が行われているのが実情である。一方、日本は世界的に鮭保存事業の莫大な投資を実行しており、その結果、日本海域に回帰する天然鮭を通じた鮭産業が活性化されている。鮭祭りを構成するプログラムは、韓国と日本のお祭りで、特別な違いはないが、日本の鮭祭りは祭りの歴史と伝統をストーリーテリングして与えることができる博物館、レストランなどの施設が多様な内容で構築されている。これらのアメニティの拡充は、鮭祭りの持続可能な運営のために不可欠であり、日本の事例は、韓国の鮭祭りを発展させるための鮭の歴史的考察、鮭保存事業、天然鮭を通じた鮭産業の活性化が伴う必要があることを示唆している。
